Kolkata, August 17 The Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) will conduct elections for the university court on August 18.

According to reports, the two student groups in the university — Independent Consolidation (IC) and Student Federation of India (SFI)— will win uncontested in their strongholds.

In all, the students will select four students’ representatives for the university court — three from the undergraduate stream and one from the post-graduate stream.

“All the three candidates in the race for the nominees from the undergraduate department are from IC,” said Rajashri Dutta, spokesperson of IC. In case of the post-graduate department, SFI candidates will only file nominations.

According to a new statute, the university will have a court and executive council in place of the existing board of management and academic council.

Among the 43 members in the university court, there are 14 elected members. The rest are to be nominated. Of the 14 elected members, there are four students’ representatives, six teachers’ representatives, two non-teaching staff and two university officials.

According to the representatives of the Bengal Engineering and Science University Teachers University (BESUTA), they will participate in the election.

“The democratic component in the existing statute is very limited. We will try to modify the act so that it becomes more democratic and teachers’ representation is increased,” said Manas Hira, general secretary of BESUTA.
