New Delhi The BJP resumes the process of candidate selection for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections as the party's Central Election Committee meets in New Delhi for over next two days, beginning Wednesday.

Scheduled to start at 11 am, the CEC meeting has now been postponed till 6 pm as local BJP leaders are still in talks with the central leadership over the clutch of few names, resulting in the delay of the CEC meeting. This delay has pushed the AGP-BJP meet by a day, which will now happen only on Thursday.

The party hopes to finalise most of its seats for the forthcoming elections by mid-February.

The party will take up the states where it doesn't face alliance hitches for earmarking party seats, first. Almost half of the seats in Uttar Pradesh are likely to be finalised over the next two days. The high-profile seat of Lucknow, represented by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, may have to wait for a while.

BJP president Rajnath Singh's name has already been announced for the Ghaziabad seat. Party leaders M Venkaiah Naidu and Sushma Swaraj have said that they will not contest and instead "focus on overseeing the campaign". The plan, however, may have to change, for, the BJP brass wants most of its top guns to be in Lok Sabha. Sushma Swaraj might be fielded from Bhopal and Venkaiah in the past has shown interest in contesting from Nellore (Andhra Pradesh). Party general secretary Arun Jaitley is also set to contest, but speculation about his choice of his seat continues.

The party has also sounded out a good number of professionals for the coming election. Former Air Force chief A Y Tipnis has shown willingness to contest but the party has not been able to find a winnable seat for him. Shatrughan Sinha, who had been issuing veiled threats by the media, will be accommodated in Patna Saheb primarily because of his past association with the party, and his utility value in the future.

The party's candidate selection exercise has, however, been jinxed from the word go. Learning from the BSP trick of early announcements that give candidates enough time to campaign and consolidate, the BJP had initiated the exercise way back in July last year that however got hindered by the "cash-for-votes" controversy. Early this month, again, party veteran Kalyan Singh left the party posing new problems for the party.

The party, in a shift from traditional approaches, had dispatched close to 150 "observers" all across the country to gauge the mood at the "local level". The reports were discussed and at the central level. The party then asked all state units to constitute election committees and finalise the names with the central election committee. While the party has variously toyed with ideas like more representation to women and youth, it has now come around to view that winability alone will be the decisive factor in deciding candidates' names.

How can any intelligent and fair-minded person can join this morally bankrupt and, caste and religion obsessed party. To expect a person of high moral values among these monkeys is oxymoron.

Lok Sabha election by Vaid S C K on 28 Jan 2009

In view of next lok sabha election, BJP friendly people want that BJP should accord first preference to selecting candidates with clean image and proven integerity. It is easy to say than doing in the backdrop of national scenario. BJP should ,atleast find 350-400 candidates of high calibre and mobilise all resources for their success. If they win 275 seats, they can form government on its own strength. Baba Ram Dev can lend full support for candidates of high moral standing.

...oh really !! by Suresh on 29 Jan 2009

but for doing all that.. they have to start cleaning up themselves from the top.. remove useless leaders like advani, sushma, delink themselves from terror outfits like vhp, bajrang dal, sri ram sena, rss etc, bring riot perpetrators to justice, bring people with corruption charges to justice.. etc etc etc.. then only they can dream about having "candidates of high moral standing"
