BJP objects to Tharoor's remark on Aussie race attacks

Allahabad The BJP slammed Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor for describing the recent attacks on Indian students in Australia as a "domestic matter" of Down Under, saying "It is not a simple law and order problem."

Referring to the minister's remark in Kerala on Monday, saffron leader Murli Manohar Joshi said, "It is hard to understand how the minister could describe the attacks on Indian students as a domestic matter of Australia. It is not a simple law and order problem. Racial prejudice and violence resulting from there can not be dismissed as a country's internal matter. He (Tharoor) needs to remember that even Mahatma Gandhi had begun his political activism by raising a banner of revolt against racial prejudice in a far-off land (South Africa)," he said.

Tharoor, the Thiruvananthapuram MP, had told in his constituency, "I think that this (racial attacks) must be seen principally as a domestic issue for Australia to deal with, within their own society, rather than as a bilateral problem between Australia and India."

But at the same time, he had said, India wanted to make it clear that when its students go abroad for study, they were not in any way put under danger. "But, very much, the responsibility is the Australian Government's".

Constant efforts to---- by romesh.sharma on 20 Jun 2009

Dear Mr.Editor for the last few months falisified reports and exaggerated efforts to demean/defame BJP/RSS/Hindutava are very frequently published.More common is head-lines of news which are simply confusing and have nothing to do with the contents.Through this practice your large and most read publication loses its credibility. This doesn't incite the readers but irritates. Here in this report too why and what for BJP should be held responsible for objection raised by one person who does belong this Party but this is his independent action. The standard of journalism is steeping down only,as it appears, because evry effort is being made to popularize and woo Congress,pseudo-secularism and Nehru-Gandhi dynasty.Perhaps I am wrong but this what most readers get impression.Hope you will intervene and do the needful to bring some neutrality in reporting.

Variation in judgment---- by romesh.sharma on 19 Jun 2009

Though political contradictions are common and aren't one-way traffic. From Mr Joshi's criticism Mr Tharror earns more popularity than Joshi himself.Without his objection Tharoor wouldn't have been wide-spoken as now. This is unthoughtfullness of Joshi to exaggerate trifles like this and be left in awkward state. On the other hand Mr Tharror could have used some kind of diplomatic language of which he is well versed. The truth is hard to establish behind such attacks but certainly these can't be claimed to be racial motivated.Indians must learn to be open and integrate with the people of the Land in Australia or anywhere else. They have their own groups and most of them have over-sensitive conscience,a paralysing element of character, which by suggesting constant petty and ingenious scruples holds them back from being useful to the culture, society and interests of the country they live in.If not they must keep distance and maintain discipline to avoid envy or antipathy which is justified

indians in australia by m alam on 17 Jun 2009

there's no doubt that primarily the problem is a domestic issue of australia but in view of the no. of attacks taking place, expression of concern by the indian govt. is in order.it also calls for investigation of the racist angle and also whether indians are poor respectors of local laws and civic behaviour.points reg. bjp or gandhi are irrelevant.

lie low and go with the flow by karl on 17 Jun 2009

Some Indians cannot integrate. You only need to travel by train in australia to figure this out.You can hear the Indian before you see him.(I am of Indian descent)Most of the students here are quite unmannerly ,

Let Joshi recall REAL history by Sampathkumar Iyangar on 17 Jun 2009

When did Joshi come round to accept the white lie propagated from New Delhi to brain-bleach the people that the Father of Nation raised a banner of revolt against racism in SAfrica? Was the lawyer not fighting only for Gujarati and Marwari Seths who retained him? He had been sent by his well-to-do parents to study in UK and become Barrister. The fact is that Gandhi pleaded with the colonial masters to not equate the 'gentlemen merchants' with 'uncultured black natives' and exempt them from some restrictions. Interestingly, his 'victorious campaign' only led to exemptions to these 'gentlemen' only from the ban on entering First Class coaches and not for 'natives'. Gandhi got projected as swadeshi guru only in his later days in dirty Indian politics financed by big tycoons like Birla. The so-called freedom fighters cultivated hooligans to coerce the public to shun superfine fabrics and liquor the tycoons manufactured. Indians must dump Gandhigiri if they want to be accepted in Oz.

There should be an international court. by pinaki on 17 Jun 2009

In a way BJP has a point, India does not have any moral high ground, the world did not point finger at us when our own people were bashing our own brothers in the name of language. But both cannot be internal issues. There should be an international law and court for people affected by such hate crimes.

indian in australia by arish sahani on 17 Jun 2009

Its unfortunate our indian leaders have no love for indians ( hindus ) any where. Any muslim in trouble our Hindu sikh PM looses sleep. But our hindus convert like shahi has no love for his ancient culture nor india or its people. Indians are most unfortunate people in this world. After getting freeedom they are still treated like third call in their own country as well in the world. Shashi should be taught a lesson in next election.Time fro hindus to unite if they want to suvive.

BJP's misguided patriotism by GNS on 17 Jun 2009

As an Indian Australian,I object to BJP's interference in Australia's domestic troubles even if they involve Indian citizens. How will they react if Australia objects to India's handling of Indians' crimes against foreign citizens ?After presiding over well-organized mass murder of more than 2000 Muslims in Gujarat,BJP is least qualified to speak about race crimes. In fact, most attacks on Indian students in Australia are opportunistic crimes against vulnerable people. Most long-term Indian Australians DO NOT face any racism. These crimes take place mostly at late night,in totally unsafe suburbs.Indian students should learn to follow local laws and NOT work beyond legally permitted 20 hours per week, stay in better suburbs, never work late at night and should not come to Australia if they aim to meet all living and tuition expenses from working beyond 20 hours per week. I know many Indian students who break local laws as there is no supervision here.BJP : don't create another BJP here.

we need to integrate by aussie indian on 17 Jun 2009

As an aussie who was born in India, I have to say that Australia is not a racist country. A lot of the attacks have been carried out by Africans and people from midde eastern backgrounds. Of course a few real Aussie scumbags are involved. These shitbags also attack other Aussies and anyone who they consider a soft target. Indian bashings are a new phenomenon. If we look at the timeline relating to Indian immigration to Australia you can see why. In the 50s 60s and 70s we had the Angloindian community that migrated here with the intention of integrating and assimilating into Australian society, then we had educated Indians who came with the same intention mostly in the 80s and 90s. These 2 groups have had no problems here and have adopted Aussie ways. There were no attacks. Then came the mass influx of Indian students mostly from Punjab who are here NOT to study but to get a qualification that will get them a resident visa. They will not integrate , hence the problems

When in Rome ... by Sans on 16 Jun 2009

If Shashi Tharoor was a petty politician then he would have jumped on the 'Racism' bandwagon, what he said about the Australian situation proves that he is a wise man. Its up to Indians in Australia to generate respect for themselves. In the current situation, both Indian and Australian Governments are doing what they can.

aDON'T BLAME SHASHI THAROOR FOR IT , IT IS TRUE POLICY OF THESE PATHETIC GOVERMENT by n.r.i on 16 Jun 2009

IT TRUELY SHOWS HOW NATIONALIC AND PATROTIC THESE CONGRESSWALA ARE. THEY CARE HOOT IF INDIANS ARE MUDERED OVERSEAS PROVIDED THEIR LIFE AND LIVES ARE SAFE AND SOUND IN INDIA. THE TRUE COLOURS OF THESE CONGRESSWALA UNDER SCENT SONHIYA GHANDGI COMES OUT WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS . SHE ( WHITE ITALIAN QUEEN ) HAS NEVER SAID A SINGLE WORD ON EVENTS TAKING PLACE IN AUSTRALIA BECAUSE , SHE LESS CONCERN ABOUT INDIANS SUFFERINGS.SHE IS ONLY INTERESTED TO SEE THAT RAUL VINCI GHANDGI BECOMES THE P.M. SO THE FAMILY CAN LOOT THE COUNTRY. THAT WHAT EDUCATED YOUTH OF INDIA WANTS . SORRY FROM N.R.I

murli jokes by sandeep on 16 Jun 2009

I wonder how Mr. Murli could use the phrase "Racial prejudice and violence resulting from there"...They idolize this concept for political gains and then oppose it when it comes from other sides.

mr by carlton on 16 Jun 2009

As a person of Indian origin who lives in Australia, I agree with Shashi's assessment of the situation here. Its good to see that India has politicians capable of rising to the ocassion and thinking outside the box unlike the dodgy lot of politicians who make us the butt of ridicule. Australia is NOT racist. India is more racist ( you only need to look at the matrimonials to confirm this( only fair skinned brides need apply..match required for fair skinned brahmin boy etc 2. Indian students need to realise that they need to have more Aussie friends and integrate if they want to be accepted.3.They are here because they chose to come here and NOT because the Aust government asked them to , and they should abandon their mission to try and Indianise this country,(an example of this is when we were at a petrol station on Newyears eve and could not get petrol because the Indian students blocked all the pumps and started singing and dancing with Punjabi music blaring)Aussies are easy going
