BJP says Communal Violence Bill dangerous, against majority

New Delhi Terming the proposed Communal Violence Bill as 'dangerous', the BJP opposed the legislation at the National Integration Council meeting here, saying it presumes that the majority community is always responsible for such riots.

"We feel that the Communal Violence Bill is a dangerous Bill as it harms the federal structure of the Constitution. It allows the Centre to hold all the powers. Moreover, it does not consider anybody a citizen and treats a person only as one belonging to either a majority or a minority," Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj told reporters.

Her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley and Chief Ministers of three BJP-ruled states -- Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank (Uttarakhand), Sadanand Gowda (Karnataka) and Raman Singh (Chhattisgarh) -- echoed these sentiments at the NIC meeting.

The BJP made it clear that the Bill in its present form, which has been drafted by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council, should not come to Parliament.

"You will write off a person as a criminal, just because he or she is born in a majority community and you will presume that a person would be a victim only because you are born in a minority community. This bill is very dangerous," Swaraj said.

The main opposition insisted that if passed, this legislation will encourage communal tension instead of reducing it, as it seeks to divide the country into majority and minority communities.

"The draft bill presumes that the majority community is unjust, and the minority community is the victim. But in our country, various sections of community are in a minority in one state and a majority in another state. The provisions of the Bill will go against the majority community in various states," Swaraj said.

Communal voilence bill by Srinivasan on 11 Sep 2011

Congress is to save their face from the problem due to the correption they try to introduce a bill in the name of communal voilence to attreac other than hindus to get vote. This is tool being used by the congress and other regional parties to get vote. I stayed in Yemen, Srilanka,Gulf and now in Africa. Every local government is pro to their local people and they ensure that the people from other countries are not been affected what ever the religion they belongs. But when ever congress bring any bill related to the common people, they ensure that muslim are more beneifitted than the hindus particularly forwad people. Now time has come to introduce common civil law and the reservation should be based on economically poor and not on caste or religion, to get good quality of future executies, but not at the cost of the standards being follwed to so on.

Where there is communical voilance by Amar on 11 Sep 2011

I want to ask where there is communial voilance now a days? India is not the India of the 1990s Congress government is dividing the country! It should not be "Communial voilance" bill.. It should be "Common Civil code" bill. Lets address our burning issues like poverty, illitracy, votebank politics and move ahead ! Minorities were always safe in India !

Sad consequences of ruling by a party having no patriotic leader by Chand on 10 Sep 2011

Unless the present Govt led by a corrupt & draconian party having foreign elements in command, is thrown out immediately, there will be many examples of such dangerous actions. There is not a single minister in the ruling party who is working for the nation of 1.2 billion people.

It was expected that BJP will oppose this Bill. Why not they are behind all communal violence and want to protect Modi. However this bill is not against hindu or in favour of muslims. It is against violence against minority or SC/ST. Minority doese not mean muslim it covers jain, budhist, sikhs, parsis, even hindus in many states of India like Punjab,J&K, Manipur etc
