In fast-paced developments, the JMM offered "unconditional" support to the BJP after which its Legislature Party elected former chief minister Arjun Munda as its leader.
Munda met Governor M O H Farooq and claimed the support of 45 legislators in a House with an effective strength of 81. The Governor said he would look into it and convey his decision to the party.
"We have given a list of 45 MLAs to the Governor requesting him to invite (newly elected BJP legislator party leader) Arjun Munda to form the new government. The Governor said he would look into it and inform us," BJP's state unit President Raghuvar Das told reporters after meeting Farooq.
He said that in the list of 45 MLAs, the name of JMM MLA Poulus Surin, did not figure as he was in judicial custody.
Das handed over the list to the governor in the presence of 42-year-old Munda, also the party's national general secretary who took over as CLP chief after incumbent Raghuvar Das quit the post on the direction of BJP president Nitin Gadkari.
In the list submitted to the Governor, there were 18 MLAs each of BJP and JMM, two from JDU, five from AJSU and two independent MLAs-- Chamra Linda and Bidesh Singh.
"JMM has extended unconditional support to BJP's initiatives to form a government," Jharkhand Mukti Morcha spokesman Suprio Bhattacharya said.
Besides Munda and Das, AJSU president Sudesh Mahto and JMM leader Hemant Soren, son of the JMM chief, were present at the Raj Bhavan.
AJSU's vice-president Praveen Prabhakar said his five-member legislature party has extended full support to the BJP's initiative.
Meanwhile, in Delhi, top leaders of Congress were huddled for more than an hour to discuss the evolving political situation in Jharkhand.
Home Minister P Chidambaram is learnt to have briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on the situation in the state and options before the UPA. The meeting was also attended by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A K Antony and Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily.
Congress has 14 MLAs and its JVMP has 11 lawmakers.
Ties between allies BJP and JMM had soured following cross voting by Shibu Soren in the Lok Sabha during cut motions in the Budget session in April brought by BJP and Left parties.
After the BJP threatened to withdraw support, Soren agreed on sharing power on rotational basis but later went back on his word.
Shibu Soren resigned from the chief minister's post on May 30 following withdrawal of support by the BJP and the state came under President's Rule on June 1.
The total strength of the Jharkhand Assembly is 82. One nominated MLA from Anglo-Indian community, Joseph P Galstaun, died in June.

bihar is the main target....this will create a mahaul in favor of NDA before the bihar elections....it is also too close to have any problems before those elections....sounds like a good deal....good governance in jharkhand will only be a bonus....which is probably doomed till it can elect a majority govt....jharkhand govt will surely not last the full term...bbhu when it has elections then BJP can claim that it made all efforts and now electorate shud give it full majority
thats what the rightists are...their ardent supporters commenting sans one...wonder what the righteous empathizers will have to say if the the deal..lets call it spot fixing does not materliase. Dimwits
It is quite ironical that BJP is going to form the government in Jharkhand with the support of JMM. BJP had made quite an issue of Shibu Soren being a tainted minister in Manmohan Singh's government. What has changed now? The BJP seems to throw all its morals to the wind when it comes to grabbing power. This is not the first time - we have not forgotten how the BJP had formed the government in Himachal Pradesh by joining hands with Sukh Ram, the very same Sukh Ram on account of whom they had stalled the functioning of Parliament.
Then Shibu Soren was convicted and was absconding minister in UPA cabinet. Now he is cleared of charges. Hope this helps you understand BJP view. Any way UPA has not dissolved Jarkhand assembly with an idea of coabling some ragtag UPA govt. which is prempted by BJP. That is hgood politics BJP.. use all tools to defeat this corrupt UPA regieme controlled by Italian mafia..
It is better BJP capture power not only in states but also at the center since it is a lesser devil compared to Congress and its allies. Congress is totally corrupt and its PM is inefficient to run this country. Congress has mismanaged India and today we have food rotting and hungry dying for want of food. Congressmen's priority is to spent millions in repair work of stadiums but have no money and intension to build ware houses for the storage of food.
Bjp congrats for giving the people of jarkand their democratic rights to be ruled by the peoples choice of the state and not giving in to dictatorial rule of the congress from Delhi.Secondly forming a democratic government on your terms and condition for the interest of the people of jarkhand
Whatever BJP is that doesn't matter. What matter is at least Jharkhand will have an electecd govt. Moreover till now BJP is best in Jharkhand under last regime of Arjun Munda.
I think it is JMM which is opportunistic and power hungry instead of BJP. BJP did right thing by claiming the power thus ending Presidents rule which was giving nothing to the state people. JMMs unconditional support is another sign of opportunism ..they can black mail and withdraw support anytime... thus pushing for another election. We all know how much elections costs.
BJP should not accept support from JMM. It would be political suicide. JMM can flip sides anytime. They can black mail the govt and it will not be good for the BJP.
we wish to have ahad a mojority to form a bjp goverment without suport of JMM but because the people voted also for them than their voice must be heard BUT THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT IT IS A COALITION ON BJPS TERMS
They do not remember the UP experience when they formed Govt. with BSP. They will not be able to implement their Bhagwa Agenda and will become weak in JK. Good for Muslims of that state.
BJP is power hungry and it will do anything to capture power. This one saga shows how much the BJP leaders will do to capture power.
