BJP will always be an appendage of RSS: Liberhan report

The Sangh Parivar is a "highly successful and corporatised model of a political party" and as the Ayodhya campaign demonstrated, has developed a highly efficient organisational structure, the Liberhan Commission said in its report.

It said the BJP "was and remains an appendage of the RSS, which had the purpose only of providing an acceptable veneer to the less popular decisions and a facade for the brash members of the Sangh Parivar".

The Commission, which went into the demolition of the Babari Masjid, observed "the blame or the credit for the entire temple construction movement at Ayodhya must necessarily be attributed to the Sangh Parivar".

It noted that the Sangh Parivar is an "extensive and widespread organic body", which encompasses organisations, which address and assimilate just about every type of social, professional and other demographic grouping of individuals.

"Each time, a new demographic group has emerged, the Sangh Parivar has hived off some of its RSS inner-core leadership to harness that group and bring it within the fold, enhancing the voter base of the Parivar.

While the structure or the methods of the Sangh Parivar for aggregating a substantial public base "may neither be illegal nor strictly objectionable", the Commission held the use of this gargantuan whole for the purpose of the Ayodhya campaign was "clearly against the letter and spirit of Indian law and ethos".

"The Sangh Parivar has spent long years and mobilised its immense media clout to numb the sensibilities of the masses and at the very list to ensure the complete absence of resistance to its designs.

"The attempts by the pseudo-moderate elements even within the Parivar were predictably of little significance and were destined to fail, whether by design or otherwise," the Commission said.

It held that "as the inner core of the Parivar, the top leadership of the RSS, VHP, Shiv Sena and Bajrang Dal and the BJP bear primary responsibility. Turning to the BJP, it said "the much repeated and much denied remarks attributed to Govindacharya, who called Vajpayee a 'Mukhota' or a mask may be appropriately applied to the BJP's top leadership at the time collectively".

It noted that even without leaders like Joshi, Advani and Vajpayee, the RSS might have been able to achieve de facto clout but would not have been able to legitimise its hold on the Indian system by translating that clout into political success.

In this backdrop, the BJP was "an essential ingredient" in the Parivar smorgasbord, and essential to capture de jure power and authority, in furtherance of its goals of establishing the Hindu Rashtra.

"Be that as it may, the evidence that has been laid before the Commission does not show that the pseudo-moderates were in-charge of the situation, much less capable of changing the course the campaign was taking," it said.

"It cannot be assumed even for a moment that L K Advani, A B Vajpayee or M M Joshi did not know the designs of the Sangh Parivar.

"Even though these leaders were deemed and used by the parivar as publicly acceptable faces and the articulated voices of the parivar used to reassure the cautious masses, they were party to the decisions which had been taken," the Commission held.

These people, who may be called pseudo-moderates, could not have defied the mandate of the Sangh Parivar and more specifically, the dictate of the RSS without having bowed out of public life as leaders of the BJP, it observed.

The Commission was of the view that these leaders were "not in control of the RSS and had absolutely no influence over the direction that they had been told to follow".

"The pseudo-moderate leadership of the BJP was as much a tool in the hands of the RSS as any other organisation or entity and these leaders stood to inherit the political successes engineered by the RSS," it said.

These leaders cannot, however, be given the benefit of the doubt and exonerated of culpability, the Commission held adding that these leaders have violated the trust of the people.

"There can be no greater betrayal or crime in a democracy and this Commission has no hesitation in condemning these pseudo-moderates for their sins of omission," the Commission said.

Law by Gopal on 25 Nov 2009

If a street urchin throws a stone on a street lamp, there are enough rules to put him behind bars. Perhaps few like that must be in jail even now. Here a bunch of goons goes out and demilish an 400 hundred year old structure and nothing happens. Perhaps the leader who led it could not control the crowd he gathered or he could EVEN IMAGINE about the dangerous possibility. He can be either incomptent or plain stupid. And this guy becomes home miniuster of INDIA. The limit of power hunger is seen from him accepting a title which does not exist as per constitution of this country, i.e DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER". It is better if we talk less about these people. Gopal

Babri masjid by Wellwisher on 25 Nov 2009

It is a shame on our nation that it took us so long to find out the fact that the BJP and its extremists goons are behind this demolition. It does not require a sherlock holmes to solve this case. We all know who are the culprits right from the day when the mosque structure was demolished. Those responsible should be hanged in public, which will be a lesson for others. Any way, there is no use hanging them as they are all on their verge of death. God is there to punish them eternally.

legal incompetence hurts the cause of assimilation of secular law by society by N J Ramesh on 25 Nov 2009

While name calling as pseudo-moderates is a harmless exercise, and in the backdrop of oft repeated BJP mantra pseudo-secular, quite funny, the same can not be said of pitting the purpose of the Ayodhya campaign against the letter and spirit of Indian law and ethos. This is a seriously misguided approach to law. Ayodhya campaign was to construct Rama Temple at Ayodhya at the original garbha-griha where the Hindu believers believe it originally stood. Justice Liberhan has no locus standi to question this belief, nor declare that effort to construct the temple is anything but noble. This kind of insensitivity to religious sentiments is not only to be avoided, also be seen as dangerous. Secular law does not constrain personal beliefs in any manner, nor does it restrict any endevour derived from those beliefs. It is such legal incompetence which makes people root for Hindu Rashtra. Another way of questioning legal competence is calling such people pseudo-secular.

Liberhan report by C.S.Dixit on 25 Nov 2009

Shame on talkers, who do not mean business for Indians by JP on 24 Nov 2009

Arrest and prosecute the Babri demolishers and use Indian Penal codes, if you mean business for Indians. 1029 page of report over 17 years is pathetic waste of tax payers money, when it does not identify which laws were violated, what actions must be taken etc etc. Liberhan report has spent over 914 pages of background and has no specifics in conclusions!! It is sheer waste of time with no specific recommendations to prosecute whom, for what reasons etc. A judicial report is not a political commentary or observatory. The home minister, law ministry and all current office bearers in Delhi must be ashamed of themselves for contributing great nothings to dumbocrazy of India..Keep up the good time pass activities. Shame on these talkers, who do not mean business for Indians.

We have known this all along by Anil on 24 Nov 2009

Respected Sir,your finding has nothing new, we as citizens have known this all along but wanted to know if any commission would dare say that and bring it to the attention of the general public.that said i would want to know as a citizen of this country if any action would be taken on your report and if these organisations that have played a key part in dividing the nation on religious lines. The Congress is also a culprit in this act of division of people, have they too not played the religious card and the caste card to achieve their shelfish goals.the Late Narasimha Rao slept while the kar sevaks brought down the structure. True as you might say Kalyan Singh misled the center but was it not the centers duty to keep their ears to the ground.its a lesson well learnt what steps does your report take so that these sort of crap does not take place in the future. Moreover if there are any steps will its be implemented Is what i would like to know

Biased Views by shashi on 24 Nov 2009

The Commission has not taken into account the views of the majority of the people who were in favour of the Temple. It is very obvious that the then central Govt has also played a role indirectly assisting the demoliton. Every political party has taken advantage of religion and have interpreted it to its advantage. Congress has been the 'Mother of all' such deception.
