New Delhi Officials at state-run oil firms have called off their strike that began on Wednesday and had choked the supply of transport fuels, a union leader said. "We have called off the strike in public interest," said Sanjay Varshney.

"Over 70 per cent of the people have resumed work in marketing. By this evening, we will be able to resume fuel supply at all locations.... To make up for the backlog we would work on Saturday and Sunday too," earlier BPCL Director (Marketing) S Radhakrishnan said in Delhi.

BPCL accounts for 25 per cent of the petro goods market in the country, while HPCL accounts for 27 per cent and IOC the rest.

HPCL has been functioning normally throughout.

OIL PSU OFFICERS STRIKE by Rajus on 11 Jan 2009

It is simply amazing how ignorant and unaware, we(incl journalists, print media, tv etc) are. We dont know the difference between clerks working in govt offices and professionals working in Oil companies! We think oil PSU officers salary is paid from common man's tax! We simply take everything and anything reported in newspaper or tv as true. Politicians and Bureaucrats just exploited this lack of awareness and ignorance among common man to project the Oil officers as terrorists and traitors and themselves as angels / guardians of the society. The salaray being drawn by the Oil PSU officers was last framed in 1997. The pay supposed to revised from Jan 2007 was finalised only in Sep 2008. The revision itself is only Rs.3000 to 4000 per month and stands good upto year 2017 (minimum). Oil officers have seen a Booming India but nobody increased their pay during that period. It is not their fault that recession came when their pay revision was finalised.

goverment ruthless by selvan on 11 Jan 2009

Oil psu employees fighting for thier basic need of salary. But Govt has to see and negotiate instead,it is going in arrogant way.We heard employees given enough notice to govt.but govt simply rejects.Media also with out knowing information, they are affected the eployees and thier families. As a comman man govt should apologise and look into thier greivences.

Oil Strikes by Amit Dubey on 11 Jan 2009

The medis has been irresponsible to say the least and have toed the Govt Line. The salary revision last done in 1997 was due for revision in 2007 .It's 2009 now and the same has not seen the light of day. The oil companies are not asking for addiitonal funds from the govt for payment of salaries, the salary will be paid from their own funds - where does the govt come in ? When crude prices hit USD 145 per barrel , the govt let the oil companies bleed to the extent that in One quarter , a company like IOCL made a loss of 7000 crores - who is responsible for this - the govt or the oil companies ? Oil bonds , passed on by the govt to the oil companies are just pieces of paper with a lock in period of 10 years , The Govt incidentally collects their taxes on the bonds in advance. The lock in period of 10 yrs means that the burden of payment has passed on to the mext Government - whoever it is - the Govt has also not bothered to keep any contingency funds for the payment of the oil bonds .

Serving the nation wit sweat by ONGCian on 10 Jan 2009

I am working with ONGC. All the recent bad sentiment about OIL worker is the creation of wrong reporting of news channels like ZeeNews. Also, this shows the ignorance of common man about the working of oil industry. To say that we are traitors and DESHDROHI is totally unjust and disrespect to all ONGCians who have given sweat and blood to extract some drops of oil from earth.Against all odds,we lift pipe of one ton weight, push pipes with hands of 30 mtrs length and 3 ton wt.Hot mud of more than 65-70 deg C temp used to pour over body and we have to work in this condition only in open atmosphere in every weather like 45 deg temp, chilling cold or heavy rain, this also at great height of 120 ft .I have seen many of my friends breaking their hands, legs, backs after taking every safety precautions. That too for cont 12 hrs after travelling 6 hrs .Aftr passing from ISM Dhanbad, only passion for service to the nation is the only motivatng factor.

PSU Strike and Salary Hike by Akki on 10 Jan 2009

The entire episode has been misreprsented .Compliments to the media that lapped up and presented the misinformation throughout. Forget investigative journalism:it was not even analytical Journalism.was it naivity or reverence to the hand that feeds? The pay revision is 10 years old does the media know it or project it?The confidence in Media Coverage grows by the second.

psu strike and officers salaries by rajiv on 10 Jan 2009

shame on the government for not addressing the greivances of the officers of psus in a constructive manner. the home minister's contention that officers cannot get morre than the salary of the chief justice of india is just so much nonsense. the psu officers do far more for the country than does either the h m or the c j i. unfortunately even the media got taken in by the irresponsible attitude of the government. the psu officers deserve a much better deal

Oil Strike by Ashok Chhibbar on 10 Jan 2009

What is India coming to? We dont need any terroristsfrom across the borders to disrupt our lives. We have enough of our own in the form of politicians, PSUs,truckers, etc who call for a Bharat bandh or "chakka jam" at will. High time we all said "enough is ENOUGH"! Imagine the entire country coming to a stand still for three days? If the Oil PSUs officers were so inclined they should have talked the matter with their bosses or been brave enough to be dismissed from service and fight their case in courts.

Total failure of Government machinery by A.NATARAJAN on 10 Jan 2009

The Government has to be squarely blamed for this crisis. They have only allowed the situation to get worsen. Once the Strike notice of Unions of PSU Oil Companies were received, necessary steps should have been taken to address their grievances/demands. The Government cannot afford to have double standards of offering hefty pay revisions for Government employees and denying the same to Public Sector employees. What a fantastic hike and other benefits they have effected to MPs, Ministers and others. In the same way, the Government has not properly handled the issue of Truckers strike. What is wrong in their demand of reduction in the price of Petroleum products, when the price of crude oil has fallen sharply in the International market. When the Government lost no time in increasing the fuel price, when the cost of crude oil went up, they should also reduce the price when the cost comes down. PM and FM should understand the simple economics behind this.

Blackmail by Oil Officers by C S Jacob on 10 Jan 2009

Deterrant punishment should be meted out for this blackmail by the oil-executives. By participating in strike, they lose moral authority to get work done from their juniors. Further, they knew very well that the strike was against public interest. The loss suffered by the nation should be computed and recovered from those who struck work. Why should the tax payers bear this burden? Further, for inconveniencing hundreds of millions of people the strikers should suffer break in service. This should be a lesson to all those working in key sectors, who often indulge in strike to improve their earnings, and in the process cause huge loss to the nation. In India only 7 percent of the workmen employed in the organised sector get a decent wage, paid leave/holidays, healthcare, LTC, and retiral benefits. If they are still dissatisfied they should quit. It is good that the government, this time, did not give in to the blackmail, which is antinational.

PUS officers are not villian by MAHESH on 12 Jan 2009

if India is sovereign, secular and democratic country than every body has its right to express his view, his grievance. Govt and media shame on them who portrayed PUS officers who are all engineers, mba graduates from reputed institutes of India as traitor, dehsdrohi etc. without knowing the fact that their demands are genuine and legal. i would like to inform that as said by Petroleum secretary Mr. R.S. Pandy " the salary of jr. officer is 1 lakhs to 3 lakhs" which is actually only 21000... after paying tax of 70000 to 1 lakhs. The other thing it was not the flash strike, union has been pursuing this demands for last 2 years. But govt. didn't give a thought. If we are producing IAS who don’t care about county and the genuineness of problem than what for they are. the total loss of around 4000 crores, the sole responsible for this is govt. they could have resolve this issue within 2 hrs but they don’t wanted to becoz of political interest and portraying them as saver of country by creating the villain as PUS officers.

esma should also be applied to PILOTS AND ENGINEERS OF INDIAN AIRLINES IF THEY GO ON STRIKE. pilots and engineers have disrupted flights very often and they must not be allowed to do it again

Blackmail by Arya Newton on 09 Jan 2009

Let me paint a scenario to my friends from these PSUs. Consider your conitnued stike draws a number of angry people carrying stones attacking your residence places and you call in the police for help but you learn that they are on strike as they are being very pporrly paid and job conditions are pathetic. Even though you would would agree with their very genuine grievances, would you still not expect them to perform their duty which is maintaining law and order and air their greivances in a different manner ? When you deicide to join PSUs , you must place masses interest first and resolve not to blackmail. We all know that there has been some discontent in the army for some while regarding pay-revisions but would we ever imagine the soldier to declare they are on strike ??? So, Please be like these soldiers - continue to serve your nation and simulataneously DO express your unahpiness about your terms but not holding the nation to a ransom.

PSU by Kumar Kumbla on 09 Jan 2009

Another PSU sector is Banking. The service provided by this sector is horrible. Most of their employees have no respect for customers They get hefty salaries, get more benefits than other sectors and do little work with lot of grumbling.

PSU oil sector employees are being unreasonable by Indian on 09 Jan 2009

First things first......let us all understand the basics......the world at large does not owe us a living. The oil sector employees are all very well paid compared to most other sectors. And they want hefty hikes in addition to this.Fact is if someone does not like the conditions of pay,he/she is free to leave and join other employers where they think they will get a better deal.Such disgruntled elements cannot hold the entire nation to ransom, they can always leave for better prospects,if they cannot they should shut their loud mouths and stay put. They are exploited at all. They can always leave if they feel they are worth much more.Period.

Strike by Employees of PSU Oil Companies by A.Natarajan on 10 Jan 2009

You have not understood the concept at all. The Government has thoroughly failed to handle the situation. When the Unions had given the strike notice, necessary steps to have been taken to address their demands. When the Government announces hefty pay revisions to MPs, MLAs and Ministers, there is every justification for considering the demands of employees who are working for the betterment of the economy. Instead of analysing the issue in its full perspective, your irresponsible comment with your fictitious name as 'Indian' is most unwarranted.

strike justified by ongc gt on 09 Jan 2009

Its sad to see how IGNORANT the common people are about the issue.Firstly, the strike is not a sudden surprise which has taken the govt unawares. The Officers Assoc. has been negotiating since one year, and have been trying to get the issues settled without resorting to strike.Secondly, they are NOT ASKING FOR TAX PAYERS MONEY! The payments are going to be made by the individual companies only. Actually, it is these companies who are paying crores to the Indian Govt. ONGC paid more than 10,000 crores to the Exchequer last year. Thirdly, these are COMPANIES NOT GOVT DEPARTMENTS. They make profits and losses, they fight it out wth private players in a level playing field. Their employees are a huge poaching ground for these pvt companies, who pay very high salary. If u have to maintain the profitablity of these companies FOR NATIONAL BENEFIT, u must give them competitive salary. Isnt it simple business sense? True, there will be many who will easily take their place for lesser pay, but then do u even have any idea of something called TALENT RETENTION, EXCELLENCE, COMPETENCY? Fourthly, the media has not given the true picture, and thats a shame. It seems its completely been bought over by the vested interests.

THINK BOTH SIDE by BHARAT on 09 Jan 2009

I am working with ONGC and i very well know how to drill well in deep rough sea. we work day and night far from our home. real fact is that some one not interested to hike PSU salary in comparison of govt employee. pay revision not daily activity it take 10 years so our minister must hav far vision. some news channel flashing wrong data that entry level saw will 1 lakh and CMD 3 lakh. truth is that entry level just Rs 2000 to 3000difference is there .

People who strike in Essential Commodities are equivalent to terrorists by Shivaji on 10 Jan 2009

Stop crying......u can always leave your job if you are underpaid! by Indian on 09 Jan 2009

And how many sectors give us entry levels of even INR 20,000/-? Fact is most people in our country start their careers with pay packets of around INR 6000/- or 7000/- at most and that too with no job security...and I am not talking of just any Tom from the streets,I am speaking of graduates who work with their hands and legs like you claim to!Get down to earth, man! If you don't agree with your pay you can always go to where you feel you'll get paid better!Stop complaining.Period.

Ignorance and callousness by Sandeep on 09 Jan 2009

It seems you are totally ignorant. People having Engineering/ Management Degrees from good institutes do not start their career with Rs.6000-7000/- salary.Even plain- graduate Call Centre employees get more salary these days

APPLES AND ORANGES.... by rysk on 09 Jan 2009

Well, I am not a PSU Employee, but Stating that average indian gets 7000 Per month and comparing it to someone who cleared a competitive exam AND has a professional degree is plain stupid.

PETROL - TRANSPORTER STRIKE by balu on 09 Jan 2009

The Government is unnecessarily creating problem. At the First instance it should have reduced the Petrol and Diesel Prices as per the international crude oil prices. On what way the Government is right, I don't know. When there is a price increase it increases the fuel prices. Similarly when there is a decline the Government should immediately reduced the prices. The crisis won't arise. This Government wants Problems, enjoys on the suffering of the common man. That is the basic policy of the Central Government.

India's problem by suraj on 09 Jan 2009

India screeching to halt The above headlines, if ever a phrase pun exist, would relate to matters in the past couple of days owing to the strike by officers of the PSU Oil Companies. Indeed this is the last straw that this country needs to bring it to a complete screeching halt. Lets take the political-socio-economic situation of this great nation in the past few months 1. The economic situation on account of the financial services giants going bust in the US and elsewhere. As much as we would like to believe that we are quite insulated by this global economic meltdown, ripple effects are being felt which will reflect in the corporate India's performance in the coming months. 2. Terrorists strike in Mumbai, leaving India's financial capital bleeding for a few days. 3. Nation-wide Truckers strike. 4. The Satyam fiasco unplugged. It will take a few minutes for financial analyst to calculate how much as a nation we have lost thousands of crores of rupees as a result of all of the above.

strike totally justified by vishwanath borhade on 09 Jan 2009

ders all caios dat officers goin on strike ...lets sack them n all but first see is the strike spontaneous....NO the issue of pay revision is since 1st jan 2007 and the goverment is totally aware of it.....this not first time that the association told goverment about strike.strike was deffered 5-6 times before understanding the situation of country being unstable but it has been high time goverment is fooling officers 2years....first they set up a committee of review the salary of officers once the committee gives report they dont even stand on it.....WTF isnt dat committe set up by the goverment atleast give the package wat the committee says.i think this situation arised due to goverment fooling the officers and giving assurance which they never intended to complete..lets hope now goverment get out of its big sleeep of 2 years n take some imediate steps to resolve the issue...actually media is to be blamed who jst hype the pay structure after pay revision in regard of elections.
