Kolkata, February 27: Jobs in call centres and retail marketing are no longer taboo for Muslim girls and boys even from conservative families, if the responses received by a trust for training of underprivileged youths of the community are any indication.

The number of applications received by the Educational Support Council for training of underprivileged Muslim girls and boys for the jobs are clearly an indication of the perceptible change in mindset, ESC Secretary S Ahmed said.

With huge opportunities in call centres and retail marketing, the Council invited applications from Muslim boys and girls for free training.

"The Council received about 3,500 applications for the training programme. The response was overwhelming. We never thought that so many were interested in training for jobs in call centres and retail marketing," Ahmed said.

He said the training programme was scheduled to start from March 9.

"Initially, we thought it will be a problem to accommodate so many candidates, but seeing the response we have decided to accommodate all 3,500 applicants," Javed Akhtar, a trustee said.

A 16-week training would be given in English, personality development and presentability.

Ahmed said night duty for girls, who constituted 30 per cent of the applicants for call centres, would not be a problem as there were security arrangements.

Job and security---- by romesh.sharma on 27 Feb 2008

Muslim girls, christian girls or Hindu girls all of them have and will have the same problems and for that they need security and protection from the bad elements in our society.I don't think if these jobs were ever Taboo for muslim girls and boys and why its being said is beyond imagination. These security arrangements must ensure full protection at work and to and from work place.
