BRT trial run put off for want of ‘final touch-up’

New Delhi, March 19 THE first trial run of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will not take place tomorrow, as it had been announced earlier. With the corridor still requiring some final touch-ups, the test run on the stretch between Moolchand and Ambedkar Nagar has been rescheduled for March 25 and 26.

Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta said: “Since we can have a complete test drive only once everything is in place, we have decided to conduct the trials on March 25 and 26.

“We had set a deadline of March 20 for the agencies involved in the construction and setting up of the corridor to complete their work. Most of the work is over, but some final touch-up work like tiling of the cycling track, greenery along the lanes and testing of the signalling system are left,” Mehta said.

Multiplicity of agencies involved in constructing the corridor is, meanwhile, being cited as a reason for the delay and re-scheduling of the trial run.

Joint Commissioner (Traffic) S N Srivastav told Newsline: “We had informed the Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System (DIMTS) that the traffic signals will be ready by March 20. We still stand by our commitment, but are yet to receive the signal cycle.”

The traffic police were not happy with the controller software provided by the IIT as there were conflicting situations arising at a few intersections. IIT researchers claim that the traffic police had returned the software to them on Saturday after a review. The software was again handed over to the CMS Traffic Systems, which has erected the lights on the stretch, on Tuesday. “They will check it and get back to us in case they need any fine tuning,” said a researcher working on the project.

The inauguration of the corridor may also not meet its deadline of April 1. Transport officials said the inauguration will depend on the availability of the Chief Minister.

“Barring the finishing touches and the installation of traffic signals, we should in all likelihood be ready by March 31. The formal inauguration does not necessarily have to be done on April 1 though. It could happen anytime in the first week, subject to the CM’s availability.

Rakesh Mehta, however, said the inauguration depends on the results of the trial runs. “We will first see if the system is working during the trial runs and then decide on the date for its inauguration,” he said.
