Shillong BSF has asked for more battalions of forces to curb infiltration, movement of militants and enhance management on the India-Bangladesh border.

Official sources said BSF made the demand on Friday during a top security meeting in Guwahati chaired by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram where the influx from across the border was a much-emphasized issue.

Chidambaram has reportedly considered the proposal. The BSF pointed out that only 91 km border has been fenced and work is in progress on 129 km of the 577-km Bangladesh border in Assam and Meghalaya, a portion seen as the most infiltration prone.

Currently, there are 11 battalions deployed along the international border in Assam and Meghalaya.

The issue of opposition by villagers to the fencing in Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya was also raised in the meeting.

According to BSF officials, their counterpart in Bangladesh, BDR, has been objecting to the fencing in 75 patches along the international border in North-East, but have recently allowed the work to continue in 46 places.

Work under phase-I of the Indo-Bangla fencing project was started in 1989 and fencing was done in 854 km against the approved target of 857 km. Phase-II involved 2429 km of the total 4,096 km long border.

Currently, phase-III is in progress in Assam's Dhubri district. Around 364 km of the fencing that was constructed as part of phase-I of the project has been replaced so far as the old fencing had become outdated and damaged at several portions.

About 861 km of fencing constructed under Phase-I would be replaced by March 31, 2010.

Chidambaram had recently said the Centre was not satisfied with the progress in fencing on India-Bangladesh border and would take steps to speed up the project. While the Centre had decided to floodlight the entire border fence, only a stretch of 277 km was completed so far as part of a pilot project.

INDIA HAS NO FUTURE UNDER CONGRESS RULE by Ravi on 03 Jan 2009

Our PM, HM, DM are all good at convening press conferences and good for nothing. How many days have passed asking Pakis to hand over dreaded muslim terrorists but Pakis went on with denial acts and nothing has comeforth so far. Public have nearly forgotten all that have taken place. Now there is another blasts triggered by the terrorists based in Bangla. And there will another from the other side. There will be full stop to these if India talking and takes some serious steps. Our politicians are old, senile, spineless have lost the ouch of good administration. They just want to wail away time while they fool Indians to believe that thy are into serious business. Believe me! this Congress will do nothing but simply for next election. They are into this GREAT DRAMA right from Nehru days.

BSF wants more forces to curb Bangladeshi influx by Vinod Pal Singh on 03 Jan 2009

It's very disturbing to note few things that were highlighted in the above article:1. Out of the total 577 kms of border stretch with Bangledesh only 91 kms is fenced.2. Locals in Meghalaya opposing fencing.3. Even Bangladesh opposing the fencing.I fail to understand that in the matters of National security how we could get down on such trivial issues. How could we play with our security. Or BSF is trying to blame someone-else for their 'own' troubles.Dear Mr Defense Minister and others pl make things happen and facilitate completion of the fencing asap. Moreover, I believe that even if we have fencing we would require BSF to man the area.

Bangladesh and Pakistan by Sajith-Tremix al Jaber on 03 Jan 2009

Bangladesh is a big threat for India's security. Pakistan and Bangladesh must consider as enemies. We Indians should not forget the killing of 10 BSF Jawasns by Bengalis. Indias political impotent leaders forgive the criminals behind this attack. Millions of bengalis infiltrating to India every year for a better life. Really they will be a big threat for our economy as well as security. Political cowards must think about it. National security is in danger because of these 2 neighboring nations. As per defence minister 30 terror groups working in Pakistan. Does he knows how many anti Indian groups working in Bangladesh?

Instead of building fences, we should accept Bangladesi immigrants in BSF top post for secularism by Shameless Indian Secular Hindu on 03 Jan 2009

India's destiny is the leader of secularism as dreamt by our great freedom fighter leaders Gandhi, Nehru and Tagore (Bengali/ Bangladesi himself). We can achieve it by reserving top BSF posts as well as lots of positions in all Indian security/intelligence forces for our brother Muxlims from Banglades, and at least the same number for our real brothers Xtians who are the epitome of secularism. We should not be building fences, but we should bring the misguided youth from Muxlim and Xtians to mainstream by love, devotion, service and if required slavery.

Secularism and Bangla Deshi immigrants by Jai Singh on 03 Jan 2009

It is good to be secular. It is also good to have a sense of shame and think twice before writing such dangerous dyed in wool comments. Bangla Deshi immigrants do not make India more secular. They do not benefit the country in any way. They have terrorists and fundamentalists in their midst. They have an agenda that is totally different from Indian values. They are a danger security and secular ideals and a drain on the nation's meagre resources. They have intolerably changed the demography of certain parts of India and the results are more than evident. No amount of "love and sympathy" can change them".Their attitude towards Hindus is well known.
