A newborn has become the centre of attention at a para club in the Dum Dum area. The baby was found inside a discarded water pipe late on Sunday night. As the news spread, more than 20 people queued up to adopt the baby.

The baby girl was found by Arnab Mohanty and Suman Kalyan Das outside their para club in Dum Dum Seven Tanks area around 9.45 pm on Sunday. Mohanty and Kalyan heard the cries of the baby while they were chatting outside their club. When they traced the place from where the sound was coming out, they found the baby wrapped with bandages inside a Kolkata Municipal Corporation pipe.

“It is really a miracle that she managed to survive the heavy rains and dirty surroundings,” said Mohanty.

According to a para club member, four to five persons came to the club on Monday morning to find out whether they could adopt the baby. The police have shifted the baby to Sukanya, a government-run childcare home. The police said that seven to eight persons approached them to know the procedure to adopt the baby. “We have asked them to get in touch with the home,” said a senior official of the Sinthee police station. Ajay Saha, a local businessman, said: “I want to adopt the baby. Though I have a son, my wife and I have always wanted to have a girl child.”

According to an official of the Sukanya home, before adopting a baby one has to get the approval of the court. Besides, the baby is given for adoption in accordance with a list of aspiring adopters. “One cannot choose a baby,” said the official.
