Bad weather, arrangements upset kitists

Ahmedabad, January 12 Bad weather was not the only villain in turning this year’s international kite flying competition at the Police Stadium here. Inadequate arrangements for the contestants also chipped in, leaving them frowning. Curious crowds thronging the sole tent for contestants on the ground did not let them either concentrate on arranging their kites but also pissed them off as people pestering them for autographs and photographs. The police personnel had a harrowing time controlling the crowds as they had to follow the instructions about not using force.

Sources say that the only tent was erected on the ground overnight because in the original scheme of things, contestants were instructed to keep their kites at stalls made for them outside the stadium ground where there was no one to look after their stuff. Ultimately good sense prevailed and at least one tent was erected on the ground, though quite small to accommodate all 62 of them. Here they were allowed to keep only their competition kites and not other kites which they had brought for the kite flying show.

Karl Longbottom, who come here for several years, said the stadium was not suitable for a competition because of its space being limited by chairs on half of the ground and trees and buildings surround the place “which was not the case on the river front last year”. Frenchman Dom Martin, who has gained fantastic grip over kite flying activity in India to call himself “Patang Ustad”, said the wind was not favourable and the competition just could not be completed in the prevailing situation”. “But I am fond of India and its tradition of kite flying .. I will go to the walled city day after tomorrow and enjoy real kite flying”, he said.

Sarah Farreira, a French journalist whose father was one of the judges at the competition, said that while things were quite okay but she felt the being a bit crammed. She proved her point when the lunch packs were distributed and many of the contestants could be seen virtually pleading for their packs while “rule bound” staff members were taking their own time completing the formality of checking their passes! They were not given a place to have lunch comfortably and many had it fitting on the ground. But no one was complaining.

Diana Babienko, a diploma holder in kite making and kite flying from Ukraine, a first time visitor, was however, blissfully happy enjoying everything else but the contest. Result could not be declared till the time of close. Meanwhile, officials when contacted, said they were helpless about the mess.
