Mumbai, March 16 Bai Avabai Petit from Bandra and St. Joseph's Secondary (Malad) beat their respective rivals Canossa (Andheri) and St. Joseph Convent (Bandra) via tiebreakers to storm into the semifinals of the MSSA girls under-14 hockey tournament, played at St. Stanislaus ground, on Sunday.

The work horse from Canossa_Tonia Gonsalves was seen all over the field yet when it came to finishing, they had a problem. Blame it on the under prepared team due to their exams or the luck factor. As their team conceeded two early goals, this frail girl brought the team back onto the match with her deft free hits. Carrying a peculiar style of hitting the ball, as she rotated the stick in the air twice before hitting the ball she attributes the success to her coach Chandra Shekar. The coach explains, "The girls have less strength, this style of hitting makes the ball go further and it helped us to draw level."

Earlier Bai Avabai girls were bang on target and were elading 2-0 with some quick and good anticipation by their forwards, Jenish Saher, Soniya Photographer. However, surprising the girls from Canossa, reduced the margin, thanks to Bai Avabai's goalkeeper Tina Gandevia, who let the ball pass through her legs. Canossa equalise just before the final whistle. The Bai Avabai coach wisely changed the goalkeeper in the tie breaker bringing in Jenish Saher, who made two good saves to see her side through.

In another tie, St. Joseph fought hard against St. Joseph (Bandra), but both the teams failed to resolve the tie. However, the tiebreaker saw their hard hitter Ruchitga Kelkar, Aloki Mehta, Vinita Natrajan and Kimberly Rodricks successfully converting while the Bandra girls missed two of the five tries to bow out.

In the boys under-12 quarter-finals, St Francis D'Assisi, Borivali fought bravely but the umpires looked on Don Bosco's side.
