Additional Sessions Judge V K Bansal refused to release Jagbir Singh on bail, noting that he was one of the prime accused in the case and was “actively involved in hatching the conspiracy” as per the chargesheet.
“I find that the applicant is one of the main conspirators and was there on the spot. Besides eyewitnesses, there is circumstantial evidence against him too,” the court said.
On July 23, 2001, a van belonging to security agency Brinks Arya, which was carrying Rs 2.01 crore from the RBI to ICICI Bank, Connaught Place, was looted.
Investigations showed that Jaswant, a security guard with Brinks Arya, and Dharambir, the van’s driver were involved in the crime.
The duo allegedly drove the vehicle to a deserted area in southwest Delhi where Jagbir and others waited for them in a Maruti car. The money was then shifted from the van to the car before all the accused sped away.
After remaining elusive for over two years, Jagbir was nabbed by the police in December, 2003. A subsequent probe had revealed that Jagbir was allegedly the brain behind the crime and on the basis of his disclosure statement, a part of the looted sum was also recovered.
During the trial, as many as 12 other co-accused were released on bail, prompting Jagbir to try his luck as well but to no avail as the court observed that others did not have the role of conspirators in the case like him.
