Pune, July 2 The negotiations between the management of Bajaj Auto Ltd (BAL) and Vishwakalyan Kamgar Sanghatna, the workers union, turned sour again today with around 1,100 workers turning down the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) offered by the company.

The rejection came a day after the workers had reportedly agreed to the VRS scheme offered by the company at a meeting held at Yamunanagar in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

On Tuesday, the workers were told that they would get a one-time settlement of Rs 17.75 lakh.

The company, however, offered this amount in two parts. The first payment was to be a lumpsum of Rs 5.75 lakh and the remaining money was to be paid over a period of 10 years, with a monthly payment of Rs 10,000.

Around 1,100 of the 2,700 workers at Bajaj Auto, Akurdi, had accepted the VRS offer, union sources said.

Sanghatna president Dilip Pawar said after a meeting with the BAL management that the amount being paid in parts was not acceptable to them.

“The workers were not happy with the terms set by the company at the meeting held on

Tuesday with the management. I have conveyed the workers’ decision to the management. If the workers are given the entire amount of VRS at one go, they can at least deposit the money in a bank to earn a decent amount of interest,” he pointed out.
