Chandigarh, July 06 Wife says he called, said he was taken to undisclosed location

A bank manager was allegedly kidnapped by unidentified men from the Inter State Bus Terminus in Sector 43 on Sunday.

Sumit Gupta was posted at the Mukerian branch of the Land Mortgage Bank in Punjab and had come to Chandigarh to meet senior bank officials.

Gupta’s wife, Neeru, reportedly received a call from him saying he had been abducted and taken to an undisclosed location. Neeru immediately informed the police. After the call, Gupta’s mobile phone is “not reachable”.

According to sources, Gupta had an argument with his peon Gurpal Singh on Thursday, who was found “negligent in discharging his duties”.

Gupta was reportedly coming to the city to apprise his seniors about the peon’s misconduct.

Chandigarh police said all the exit points of the city have been sealed. “We are looking for Gupta and are in constant touch with the Punjab Police and Neeru Gupta,” said an officer.

A search was also launched in the nearby areas but the police did not find any clues.

“It is very difficult to ascertain the spot from where he went missing. Gupta must have put up some resistance at the time of kidnapping but even the policemen deployed at the bus stand did not observe nor receive any information about the kidnapping,” said an officer.
