New Delhi, July 17: In its efforts to mobilise parties against the UPA Government for the July 22 trust vote, the Left on Thursday reached out to the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) but its chief Ajit Singh remained non-committal on the issue.

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan drove to Singh's 12, Tughlak Road residence this morning to seek the support of the RLD and explained the Left stand on the Government during their meeting which lasted about an hour.

"I have apprised him about our (Left) position. He explained his stand...It is not easy (for the RLD) to take a decision," Bardhan told reporters after the meeting.

Singh said he heard the views of "experienced and old friend" Bardhan on the recent political developments and that he will discuss with party colleagues the issues raised by the top CPI leader before taking a decision.

Bardhan said he discussed the current political scenario with Singh, the inheritor of the legacy of former prime minister Charan Singh who brought farmers to the national mainstream.

"He (Singh) will take his own decision," Bardhan said.

Asked why he was taking time to decide on the party line on the trust vote, the RLD chief said, "there is nothing wrong in taking decision a little late", adding that Bardhan has presented "some new facts".

Singh said both the leaders had a detailed discussion on what should be done and that he had not spoken to BSP chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for a tie-up for the trust vote.

On nuclear deal, he said: "I'm against the nuclear energy but I never said that I am opposed to the deal.

"Bardhan has provided some new facts... Let us discuss (before taking a decision)," he said.

To a question whether the Congress was resorting to "appeasement" tactics to ensure support of smaller parties, he said, "why only smaller parties, what about appeasement of bigger parties.

"In coalition politics, both the ruling and opposition parties try to align with as many parties as they can. There is nothing new in it."

On the Government proposal to name the Lucknow airport after his father, Singh said he welcomed it even though it was coming late.

He said he did not view the move as a Congress attempt to appease him before the trust vote. "I think it is a right decision taken a little late," Singh added.

Congress managers have already approached the RLD to ensure numbers on their side for the trial of strength. The 59-member-strong Left parties are engaged in an aggressive bid to topple the Government and have already spoken to parties like the BSP, TDP and TRS.

Bardhan had last week set the ball rolling by first talking over phone to BSP chief Mayawati followed by his CPI(M) counterpart Prakash Karat's visit to her residence in New Delhi.

A senior CPI leader from Andhra Pradesh opened a channel of communication with the TRS, which announced that it would vote against the Government in the wake of UPA failing to pass a resolution giving a commitment on the issue of formation of a separate 'Telengana'.

Karat had earlier said he was in touch with all parties which can take a stand against the Indo-US nuclear deal, an issue which prompted them to withdraw support to the Congress-led Government, reducing it to a minority.

Left trying to pull the Govt down by Sunil on 17 Jul 2008

How hard the left is trying to pull the Govt. down, one can wonder (for these blackmailers), that how far one can go against our own country to appease their masters (CHINA). The era of coilation Govt. will definitely takes its toll when it's come to decision, stability and integrity of country, also party like BJP (Advani: who is more interested in PM's post) is always interested in cheap politics. That's why we INDIAN'S do believe in GOD (He only can save this country).

What Next by chanakya on 17 Jul 2008

It is a strange situation in Indraprastha. Till other day all these leaders walked hand in hand to thrash communal forces. but now we find with the same vigour they are trying to pull down government which in any way will go in next 6 months. Then what is the hurry ? OK for argument sake, if government fails to get vote of confidence it will fall. So what ? Elections should be conducted in 3 months that is in the month of October 2008. How many parties are ready to go voter in their respective constituencies? Surely the numbers will change for every party. More so for left because of its illogical postures right from the day one.I wish left parties are reduced single digit along with caste based parties.

BJP , please come to sense by Avijit Roy on 17 Jul 2008

It is a fact that most of the young people and young MPs of BJP and young generation is for the N-deal. I dont know why a party like BJP is not supporting the deal ? Only for the sake of opposing Congrees. Truly speaking I was a BJP suppporter but seeing their selfish attitude and immaturity of Advani ( he is in not match with Bjapayee), I need to go with Congress. So, BJP should understand the pulse of the nation otherwise they will also wiped out from the political scene in India like Commies.

BJP by anand on 17 Jul 2008

dear avijit,i am also a BJP supporter and i am also frustrated with the stance of BJP against the deal. BJP could have gained a lot by supporting the deal. but still i won't vote for congress because BJP is much better in other aspects. remember how manmohan singh opposed and criticised vajpayee for conducting the nuke tests!!.

"Deal" is not a 'single word by Common Indian on 17 Jul 2008

If it had been a deal with US and America we would not have gone to IAEA. we are to give cerain commitments to IAEA before signing this negotiation., which is quite tricky.Since MM is in haste, there is apprehension that MM might be compromising National interests in IAEA. therefore DEal is not a problem. IAEA safeguards need to be renegotiated by total consensus of the Nation.

Anti-Indian moves on by prasoon on 17 Jul 2008

old, senile and vindictive ... by Baatul on 17 Jul 2008

Khisiyaani billi khamba noche fits aptly to these bunch of old, senile and vindictive Commies like Bardhan. Having said that, we want Manmohanji to act like a leader. A leader who can't whip whenever he wants is no leader at all.
