The fire and emergency department has allowed the shops to be opened after the traders were asked to set up an infrastructure based on fire-fighting norms in the market. If the norms are flouted, the department will ask the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to close the market. The decision in this regard was taken in the presence of Kolkata police officers, in a meeting held at KMC headquarters on Tuesday evening.
“The fire-fighting infrastructure has to be set up in the market within three weeks, after which the officers of my department will conduct an inspection. If we find any shortfall in the arrangement, we will not provide a no objection certificate,” said Gopal Bhattacharya, director of fire and emergency services.
The traders will have to arrange for the infrastructure to control fire. They have been asked to construct a deep tube well in the market premises apart from arranging water-sprinkling systems on every floor of the building. They have also been asked to construct hand pumps.
“The first three floors of the building have been found to be stable. If the fire and emergency department provides a clearance, we will not object to the opening of the market,” said Municipal Commissioner Alapan Bandopadhyay.
