The residents blocked roads after the local Maheshtala Municipality did not take any action against the real estate developer. There are 13 water bodies in the project site, which is spread across 12 acres.
A week ago, the locals had written a letter to the municipality and lodged a complaint in the Batanagar police station, demanding action against the company.
However, Sumit Dabriwala, Managing Director of River Bank Holdings Pvt. Ltd, said: “We have the fisheries department’s permission to carry out construction in the area. We have been asked to restore water bodies in another part of the project area.”
Meanwhile, South 24 Parganas ASP Praveen Tripathi, who is also in charge of the industrial zone of the district, said he inspected the area after receiving the complaint. “The real estate developers told us that they will restore the pond. But locals were not persuaded by their promise and started agitating,” he said.
