Beaten up by mob, youth dies in hospital

Kolkata, May 18 A 21-year-old youth, who was struggling for his life after being beaten up by the public on suspicion of theft, died in hospital on Sunday. According to the police, the deceased, Sheikh Jamaluddin, had suffered serious injuries on Friday after being thrashed in Pitambar Sarkar Lane in Watgunge police station area. Jamaluddin was working at Bangalore. He was suffering from Tuberculosis and had come to Kolkata for treatment on his mother Nasimara’s insistence.

On Friday, Nasimara took him for a check-up to the Mansatalla TB Hospital. Following which, she told Jamaluddin to go to their home in Watgunge while she decided to proceed to Metiabruz. When the Jamaluddin reached home, he went to his landlord Sunando Prasad’s residence for a glass of water. Prasad, however, took him as a thief and raised an alarm.

Despite his protests, the crowd severely beat up Jamaluddin and handed him over to the Watgunge Police Station. Nasimara, after hearing about the incident informed the police about his ailment. Following which he was taken to Metiabruz nursing home, where he was refused treatment.

Jamaluddin was then admitted to the Sambhunath Pandit hospital. However, police sources said he succumbed to his injuries today.
