Kolkata, February 25 A day after Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee appealed to the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha to end their hunger strike, efforts are on to bring the Morcha to the negotiating table.

Sources at the chief minister's secretariat said GJM president Bimal Gurung and other representatives may be in the city on Wednesday to hold talks with the administration. A GJM representative, however, told The Indian Express that the group has not been extended any official invitation yet.

State home secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said today that the situation is still tense in the hills. Bhattacharjee, he said, may hold talks with the local leaders to resolve the issue.

On Monday, Subhas Ghisingh, caretaker administrator of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC), met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi to brief him on the situation. He was at the Governor's House for about forty minutes.

In Darjeeling, the bandh paralysed normal life, hitting tourists and boarding schools hard. Around 26 GJM representatives continued their hunger strike. Incidents of effigy-burning were also reported.

“The GJM representatives have burnt effigies of Subhash Ghisingh and me in Darjeeling and Kurseong. When we asked to hold a rally, we were not permitted. Today, one of our leader's home at Kalimpong was gheraoed. Some people also attempted to do the same at my place. We are not in favour of a confrontation and are waiting for the 6th schedule status,” said Shanta Chettri, GNLF-MLA from Kurseong.

The GJM said it stands firm on its demands — non-inclusion of Darjeeling in the Sixth Schedule and the immediate removal of Ghisingh from the caretaker-administrator's post of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council.

Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee, meanwhile, is sending Leader of Opposition Partha Chatterjee to Darjeeling to hold talks with Bimal Gurung.
