Jodhpur The wife murdered, the husband arrested for abetting the crime, their seven-year-old daughter mired in a paternity dispute. The eldest child, aged 18, has stopped going to college out of fear and ignominy. The other daughter, 15, has been thrown out of school. This is the family of Bhanwari Devi. Or what is left of it.

Bhanwari, the auxiliary nurse midwife who allegedly possessed a video of herself with sacked Congress minister Mahipal Maderna in a “compromising position”, and whose disappearance on September 1 raised a huge political storm, was officially declared dead by CBI yesterday.

Her husband Amarchand was arrested in December after he allegedly confessed to receiving money for abetting her murder.

The three children — Sahil, Ashwini and Suhani — and Amarchand’s 70-year-old mother Pooni Devi survive on the old woman’s pension. “Our lawyer left because we could not pay him. My father is now represented in court by a government-provided pleader. We had very little to begin with, now there is nothing,” said Sahil.

None of them ever ventures out of the house in Borunda village, he said, except when they are called by CBI for questioning.

For over three months, little Suhani was told very little about her mother’s disappearance. But in December, CBI summoned her along with Sahil and Pooni to the Jodhpur circuit house for a sample of her blood following reports that her biological father could be Malkhan Singh, the arrested Congress MLA from Luni.

“They called us, made me sign a paper on which something was written in English and took a blood sample. I was not even told why,” said Sahil. A senior advocate who declined to be identified said it was illegal for the CBI to have taken the child’s sample without the consent of her guardian.

The result of the paternity test is awaited, sources said.

When The Indian Express first visited Bhanwari’s home in October, there were at least a dozen supporters from Amarchand’s Dalit community there, along with three police guards. Now there is no one.

“The police left after my father was arrested, and so did the supporters. They said ours was a tainted family, and that they wanted no part of it. We have relatives in this village, but they are too scared to come home,” Sahil said.

Sahil has quit his B.Com course in a college in Nagaur. His sister Ashwini was thrown out of a government school in Jaipur because she remained absent for three months.

“Since September 1, my brother and I have stayed at home. In December I went back to Jaipur to rejoin class, but was told I had been dismissed. The owner of the private hostel I was staying in told me my family was controversial and asked me to leave,” said Ashwini.

CBI could confirm Bhanwari’s death after Sahil identified his mother’s watch earlier this week. Bhanwari had been kidnapped and strangled, her body burnt and the remains smashed with sticks and dumped in a canal some 100 km from Jodhpur. CBI believes it has evidence to establish the involvement of Maderna and Singh in the murder.

Why Rahul Gandhi is silent? by Abhisek on 12 Jan 2012

This is the real face of Congress Party. Congress Ministers and leaders murdered a nurse after using he for their gains and the entire Congress establishment including Rahul and Sonia Gandhi are silent. Why? The media is silent. Why? Any other Party these people would have started lecturing the virtues of morality by now. Where are those Dalit crusaders and women right activists? Have all been purchased or silenced by the corrupt and communal congress party?

It is natural by ashok on 12 Jan 2012

It makes good headlines. But when parents live a dignified and respectful life, their children get the goodwill and the same dignity in society. It is just the opposite when parents indulge in unworthy acts. You cannot have the carrot but not have the stick. There is nothing unnatural about it. But let us try to help the children

Story is going like Bhanwari was raped or something. She was having FUN knowingly. FUTURE of kids needs to be protected. Govt. should SOLVE this issue at the earliest.

the school, college principals should be arrested by Piyali Banerjee on 12 Jan 2012

First of all thanks to Indian Express for reporting the aftermath of the Bhanwari Devi's brutal murder. My condolences to her children. On no ground can the respective schools throw the girls out. The police can file a case and see that the children get back their due respect. I sincerely request Indian Express to pursue this case till the children get back their normal life.

Bhawari Devi's children by shamprasad on 12 Jan 2012

It is a really sorry state for innocent children of Bhawari Devi. They are paying for the sins of Bhawari Devi & her husband. The society is very harsh on the children. one of the girls is of Very tender age.The politicians of Rajasthan who had illicit relationship with Bhawari Devi will have nothing todo with them & the poor children have to fend for themselves. If the paternity issue is decided then chidren should be declared as legitimate children of these politicians and they should be entitled to maintanance & share of their property

Sad! by Atul on 12 Jan 2012

What kind of a country is this? It has been over 65 years since independence and we are a great emerging country. Women are killed, burnt and dumped; while the perpetrators go scott free. The kids are banished from society, school throws them out and relatives fail them. Shame, shame, shame. What is exactly the fault of the children in this mess?

Very tough for the kids by Prabal on 12 Jan 2012

People are very very cruel

Politicians concerned answer - what is the childrens fault in this mess? by conscience on 12 Jan 2012

This is what happens when anyone gets involved with ruthless policians. The policians now must be made accountable for the fate of the children and must take care of them. Only this would be some kind of fairness.
