New Delhi, January 12: The CPM put cold water on suggestions for Bharat Ratna to veteran Marxist Jyoti Basu, saying the party does not accept state awards.

"It is not a practice of our leaders to accept state awards," CPM sources said when asked for comments on reports suggesting Basu's name for the top civilian award.

The sources said that during the tenure of P V Narasimha Rao as the Prime Minister, the government had offered Padma Vibhushan to former CPM general secretary and veteran freedom fighter EMS Namoodiripad.

The party had turned down the offer even at that time, they said, adding that it has never been the practice to formally ask for such awards.

The name of the Marxist leader cropped up after senior BJP leader L K Advani wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recommending that former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee be given Bharat Ratna.

"When the name of Atal Behari Vajpayee came up for Bharat Ratna, there is nothing wrong in the name of Jyoti Basu. He is also a great leader of the country", senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily said on Friday.

RJD chief and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad also supported the nomination of Basu, who holds the record of India's longest serving Chief Minister. Basu headed the Left Front government in West Bengal from 1977 till 2000.

As the controversy continued, the name of DMK supreme and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has also come up. BSP supremo Mayawati has also demanded Bharat Ratna for party founder Kanshiram.

Bharat Ratna by Abheet on 12 Jan 2008

It has become a joke. It is sad that such an honour has been so degraded by political leaders. One feels sympathy for Vajpayee, a decent man, whose name is used for Advani,s own mischievious agendas. Next BJP will be asking Bharat Ratna for Modi for his services to Hindutva for killing thousands or for Thackeray for burning churches and molesting Indian women. Mayawati has got on the bandwagon of Advani and why not? Such leaders have very few national interests but are prone to self indulgence and divisional politics. If anyone deserves such an honour it has to be Kalam who worked for the nation relentlessly and always tried to guide the young of India to succeed. Indian PM is not too far off for his services to Indian nation. He has been called many names by BJP but he carried on working selflessly for the good of the nation.

Bharat Zehars by Lakshmi on 12 Jan 2008

The best way to resolve this issue is to create a new title called Bharat Zehar. The Govt of India should confer this title immediately to Basu, Karuna, Amma, Mr and Mrs Karat, Mulla Mulayam, Pranab, Gowda (Sr), Gowda (Jr), Soni, Sonia and her buddies Mr Q and Lalu. Furthermore, there should be a rule that this title should be conferred on any person on demand without asking any questions. Long live India! Long live the poisonous politicians of India.
