An officer said Bhardwaj flaunted his friendship with Singh to any client who came to collect, till he ran into trouble with Singh himself. Over a period of three years, Bhardwaj took Rs 60 lakh from Singh, a figure that accrued to over a crore when Singh added the interest. An officer said: “Bhardwaj managed to pay back Rs 20 lakh but the outstanding was still Rs 95 lakh.”
A cursory glimpse at police records show that Bhardwaj was in major trouble four months ago when a complaint was filed against him with the Gurgaon police and a Kurki warrant issued. The matter was settled outside the police station.
Other realtors have said that Bhardwaj set up Vijay and Associates in 1996 with its office on Mehrauli-Gurgaon road. The road was the hub of property business in the 90s. However, when the bulk of the offices shifted to Loni Road later, Bhardwaj preferred to stay back. He dealt more in commercial property than residential, a local realtor said. Police officers said Singh had done business with Bhardwaj for over a decade. Bhardwaj invested his clients’ money in property and reaped profits for them when the going was good. He also made Singh a lot of money till three years ago when prospects began to dry up. He had also lost money in a few shaky deals, officers said.
