Bhutto bears responsibility for death: Musharraf

Washington, January 6: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf conceded that a gunman may have shot Benazir Bhutto but said the opposition leader exposed herself to danger and bore responsibility for her death, CBS News said.

Musharraf was also quoted as telling the CBS 60 Minutes programme to be broadcast on Sunday that his Government did everything it could to provide security for Bhutto, who was killed last week in a gun and suicide-bomb attack after a political rally.

"For standing up outside the car, I think it was she to blame alone. Nobody else. Responsibility is hers," Musharraf said in the interview taped on Saturday morning.

Pakistan's government has said Bhutto died when she struck her head on a handle on her vehicle's sunroof -- a contention widely derided in Pakistan where many people suspect Musharraf's Government of complicity. The Government has also blamed al Qaeda for the attack.

Musharraf was asked by CBS, which provided excerpts of the interview, whether a gunshot could have caused Bhutto's head injury. He replied, "Yes, yes."

The questioner asked, "So she may have been shot?" and Musharraf said, "Yes, absolutely, yes. Possibility."

Bhutto's widower called on Saturday for a UN investigation of the killing.

In an opinion article in the Washington Post, Asif Ali Zardari urged that a caretaker Government be named to oversee national elections that were postponed until next month and he outlined other standards for assessing their legitimacy.

Musharraf will be responsible for his own death, if somebody attacks him. Since his Govt has failed to protect him. Apply his own concept!

A former Pakistani military officer had told that he is suspecting that people who had loudly cheered Benazir and forced her to stand up from her vehicle at the place of her assassination, were deployed by ISI.

Bhutto's assassination by RJ Khurana on 06 Jan 2008

Major points of Benazir’s ssassination are: (a) some one shot at her and then blew himself up (b) She tried to come out of the sunroof to wave to her supporters (c) there was pandemonium following the shooting and blast; and (d) her husband did not allow the autopsy. Is there any use in quibbling over the issue whether she died by hitting her head against the car sunroof or the gunshot? It can be both. She was a politician fighting an election and had to be visible and look fearless. She did what leaders do. Public adulation is their oxygen. If in the process they are killed by terrorists they can't be blamed for alleged carelessness. Too much caution goes against the grain of a people’s leader. It is good that the Scotland Yard detectives are probing the assassination. Let us hope the truth comes out. More important is unearthing the conspiracy that led to her assassination. Asking for a UN probe at this juncture will further obfuscate the issue. Another truth is that Musharraf is fast losing his credibility. In fact he is a hated figure. The manner in which he manipulated his rise to be the civilian head of the state has turned him into a pariah. Benazir’s assassination has further destroyed his credibility. Whether he had a hand in it or not is immaterial. The passions are running high and the public perception is that in some way or the other he is responsible.

Terrorism in Porkistan by Paul Rodriguez on 06 Jan 2008

There's saying "Those who live by the sword, die by the sword. Benazir supported Islamic terrorism against India. That time they are called Jihadis, Mujahideen, freedom fighters. Now, they have become terrorists. Whenever there's democracy is Pak situation in Kashmir gets worse. Long live dictatorship in porkistan

Mushaarraf's Games by Freedom Lover on 06 Jan 2008

Ms. Bhutto’s death is nothing but a death to democracy in Pakistan. No matter who you are, irrespective of nationality, it is shame on all of us who strongly believe in freedom and democracy that we could not protect a leader, who was willing to take risk for the sake of democracy. Here are few important questions that arise in my mind:1. Why did Pakistan security forces washed the whole area right after Ms. Bhutto’s assassination?2. Why did Pakistan government informed the media that Ms. Bhutto did not die of gun short wound but died of hitting her head against the sunroof?3. Though there was a threat to her life, why didn’t Pakistan government provide extra security to Ms. Bhutto?4. How come General Musharraf escapes every attack but not an opposition leader? Most of you many not remember Pakistan’s 1999 Kargil conflict with India. General Musharraf was in charge of army at that time. Do you all know how those Indian soldiers (ordinary people just like you and me happen to be soldiers) caught by Pakistan militant/military died? Those soldiers’ genital organs were cut and they were killed. Do you think Musharraf believes in Geneva Convention? He is part of militant group rather he is a militant himself. If you follow Pakistan’s news, Musharraf always escaped attacks. What I strongly believe that Musharrf has strong connection with Taliban, Al-Quida and other terror groups. Just to convince the west Musharraf talks to these terror groups to plan an attack in such a way that he escapes the attack. Here you go! I barely escaped the attack. Give me more $. I have to fight these terror groups. This is how he drains American taxpayers money. Let us not trust this dictator/terrorist.Let us not support any violent group or a dictator to fight an enemy. Let us use EDUCATION as a weapon to bring democracy and peace in this world.

Too much concern--- by romesh.sharma on 06 Jan 2008

Dear Mr. Editor,I am sure people of India had enough and are fed-up from too much news being published relating Pakistan and the Bhutto affair/assassination.I don't think if such reports have anything to do with front-page news and big head-lines.This blame game and Musharraf's manipulations with USAmerican coloured meddling/interpretations is absolutely of Pakistani concern and interest. This is tastelessly unimportant and has no end.To know/guess the implication of power/authority fo killing Mrs Bhutto one doesn't need extra ordinary intelligence.People know it and need a break to know the final result.

THE TERROR MACHINE OF PAKISTAN'S MILITARY by A.Mahadevan on 06 Jan 2008

Safety measures? by Right Thinker on 06 Jan 2008

This explanation by the General must surely leave one spellbound. This is only a tacit admission that Pakistan is not safe for anyone who comes out his house. What about all that tall talk of having provided maximum security to Ms.Bhutto?Does that mean the security forces are mere pups in front of these terrorists?Or they hand in glove with them?Whatever be the case, there is no doubt that there is a huge short term gain for the General, which would prove to be a long term loss for the people of Pakistan.
