Chandigarh Political rivals taking each other on aggressively is common during poll season. But controversial Punjab politician Bibi Jagir Kaur, the SAD candidate from Bholath in Kapurthala, finds herself under the scanner for having issued a threat to Election Commission officials, accusing them of getting cases registered against her and her family.

The EC officials in Punjab have sent the video (The Indian Express has a copy) that shows Kaur, a former chief of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, issuing threats to the Election Commission of India.

Kaur, her daughter, son-in-law and three others, including a liquor contractor, were booked for bribing voters on January 14 after 183 cartons of liquor were recovered from a truck in her constituency. Days later, Kaur, while addressing a rally, said: “Un adhikarian de khilaf, Chown Commission de, elan kardi haan ke jena adhikarian ne mere uttey, meri bachchi uttey, mere janwai uttey, te hor mere teen saathiyan uttey parcha darj kitta hai...mainu jee karda hai, in adhikarian nu jad tak main ik daud che (voice unclear) nahin khada karangi, main vi chaen di neend nahi so sakangi.”

Loosely translated, this would mean: “I declare that I will not sleep peacefully till I take to task the Election Commission officials who got cases registered against me, my daughter and son-in-law.”

From the same platform, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, too, referred to the cases against Kaur. “I called up the officials when she was booked. The officials said they were being forced... The FIR against Bibiji is unfortunate. FIRs will be registered against those who have registered a false FIR,” he said.

“We have received a CD that contains the speech in question. We have referred it to the EC in Delhi. They will take a final call on the matter,” Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer Kusumjit Sidhu said.

Kaur had run into trouble with the EC a few days ago when a relative announced a grant of Rs 21,000 on her behalf to a school in Bholath. “After a probe, Rs 39,000 was included in Kaur’s poll expenses,” said an EC official.

Liquor in elections by vinayak on 24 Jan 2012

Politicians make money while in power. Voters can only get free booze from candidates during election period. While deprive of voters this small present. When Government has made corruption legal (Lokpal bill is pending for 45 years), why book FIRs for petty things.
