Mumbai, February 2: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray has attacked Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan for taking "more interest" in Uttar Pradesh than Maharashtra.

Thackeray said that though Bachchan has become a superstar in Mumbai but his heart is more inclined towards Uttar Pradesh than Maharashtra.

"Though he has become a star in Mumbai, his interest is in Uttar Pradesh. That is why he was trying to be an ambassador of UP rather than Maharashtra," Thackeray said at a function in Dharavi on Friday night.

He said that Bachchan was behaving as if he was an ambassador of UP rather than Maharashtra and said his loyalty was more towards UP than Maharashtra.

"That is why though he achieved everything in Mumbai, when it came to elections, Amitabh chose UP," he added.

Earlier, Thackeray received flak from political parties, for opposing 'Chhath Puja', for hurting the religious sentiments of people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

He had recently objected to celebration of Uttar Bharatiya Diwas and Chhath Puja in Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesman Sanjay Nirupam termed Raj Thackeray's comments on Amitabh Bachchan as a "foolish statement" that doesn't merit any reaction.

"If people like Madhu Limaye who is basically from Maharashtra can contest elections in Bihar what prevents Bachchan from exercising his choice," Nirupam asked.

Raj is making such statements "only to snatch the Marathi voters from Shiv Sena", said Nirupam.

Learn to face the Truth by ekta on 12 Feb 2008

hy bhagwan tum log jis meethi ka khato ho ussi pe tukhate ho sorry had to write in ur 'atypical' bihari/northi accent varna aapko samaj mein kahan aata , god knows how u folks manage to work in MNCs/Big Companies and that too in a city like Bombay. You can't even speak for nuts. And when someone talks the truth it really hurts only those who can't bear to handle it since somewhere deep down even they know what Raj Sir is saying is right.Agar Bihari/UP ke logon mein itni intelligence hain to khud ke state ke progress ke barein kyon kuch nahi kar lete ? hain koi jawab

RAJ THAKEREY IS A KUTTA KAMEENA HE IS ONLY TRYING 2 CATCH ATTENTION.

Raj Thakrey is talkign nonsense by kavitha shinde on 04 Feb 2008

This is an act to get votes from local people. He is trying divide and rule policy. Any educated person in Mumbai knows pretty well that mumbai business is in hands of marwadies and gujaraties. Look at stock market? look at even at local small busniess like super malls etc one wopuld find less maharashtrians. If all these people will leave mumbai then mumbai will not be projected on the world map the way it is. His remarks are completely nonsense. Every one has the right to spend money where he/she likes. Can't he see NRI's making money abroad and spending in india. If he is so much bothered about Maharashtra then why isn't he tryign to have peace in this state. the innocent and poor may be lured by his tactics but the truth is this will divide the country. Government should take its responsibility and take strict actions against such remarks. We all are first Indians then Gujju, marathi or any other caste. This all is done for votes.

Local Sentiments by mandar on 15 May 2008

It is surprising to see that national media who is taking Raj Thakre Left right and centre has not even bothered to see what a common Maharashtrian man thinks about all these happening.Common Marathi manoos is basically very open by heart for accepting the people from other states for years, if you see the history of this state. He is normally very accommodative and trust in live and let live kind of a person.Problem starts when someone tries to hammer his culture here in Mumbai. What is wrong if he expect people coming here should learn marathi and get familiar with Maharashtrian culture? Doesn’t marathi people gone to Gujrat and Karnataka learned local languages? Ask Gujratis from Vadodara how Marathi people are part of Gujrat now and proud to be part of Gujrat now. Problem with UP and Bihar is they want to create Mini Bihar by spoiling local culture, for which traditional Marathi people here in Mumbai got upset and further aggressive after here offensive language from so called leaders like mr Azmee and mr Amarsingh. In how many states the local people are forced like this except maharahtra ? As per constitution does maharshtrians hold right to preserve the local culture or not ? or shall they become mute spectators to see the small city in area which is their state capital is converted into slum city due to other overloaded population from non developed states ( due to political reasons ) .Raj basically speaks sentiments of local people here. There might be differences in the ways to handle this but most of the mahashtrians has started given extensive support in recent time due to above mentioned reasonHope Local sentiments are taken care in all the metros to avoid such situation.

Thackery VS Mr.B by PK on 03 Feb 2008

It is dissapointing to se all the naive coments here. It is time for Indians to see through the antics of our leaders including superstars and politicians. Mr. B is a big taker with no social and moral responsilitilies. He uses his wealth and star power to only further cause. In ths case Thackery may be a goon but Mr. B is the sae in a differen form. It as sad that sad indeed that Mr.B is not expected to conribute to a state to which he owes his career and life.

Goonda by Gaurav on 03 Feb 2008

First Thakreys tried to divide Hindu and Muslim in which they succeeded and now they are trying to create tension between North and Marathi's. Marathis have to open thier eyes and stop supporting Goonda's like Thakrey's. Let's unite and thrwo away extremism.

A leader?? by VVH on 03 Feb 2008

We are differentiating people by states and I believe soon by cities. I will not be surprised if somebody will say that people fron Nagpur or Nasik will not be allowed in Mumbai. Even God won't e able to help our country.

Raj Thakare need to go in jail by Raju on 03 Feb 2008

Come on guys, why should a man do not respect to the constitution has right to stay in the country. Why not Raj Thakre and his goons are given way in the Arabic sea?Honestly, what is contribution of Raj Thakre in Maharastra? There are lot of farmers are taking path of sucide, why not he go to interior Maharastra and teach these people how to manage their finance? May be the goons can not do that because they can not extort money from land, one has work in farms to get money from the farm!

Different tirades at different time, does it win votes? by Jake on 03 Feb 2008

There was similar tirade with Tamils and South Indians sometime back. Wanting the Karnataka and Tamils to speak Marathi. Now it has cooled off. Don't know what changed it for good.

What? by Jojo on 02 Feb 2008

And what exactly has Raj Thackrey done for Mumbai or Maharashtra except being a goon? What exactly has Raj Thackrey done for the country in general to demand such a thing from Amithabh Bachchan? AB has every right (legal or moral) to help or campaign or whatever anywhere in the country.

Shiv Sena local or all India by Dev on 02 Feb 2008

Raj Thackeray should think nationally, as most people consider Shiv Sena as a national party. By prefering Maharashtra against UP, he is creating friction between people.

Amitabh by Jyoti on 02 Feb 2008

Amitabh should be an ambassador from Bihar. Bihar needs it. Even better if he retires, so other actors can come up...

depravity of Politics by Shezaad on 02 Feb 2008

Why Should Mumbai be for Marathis? Its funny how people keep demanding things without really contributing. All Raj Thackeray does is support Molesters and tries to degrade those who contribute towards the nation.

Big B of UP. by vinayak on 03 Feb 2008

Mumbai should be of the people who stay there. But then the people who stay there should do something for the place they live in. Otherwise what is the difference beteen a Malyalee NRI in Dabai sending money to Kerala and Big B earning money in Mumbai to send money for upliftment of UP. India is what it is because people moved, settled and made the place livable. Temporary settlers make the place a slum.

Stupid Question by Mohd on 02 Feb 2008

Why does Saudi Arabia prohibits non-muslims entering makkaa? Apply same logic to Marathis and Mumbai!

Raj Thackrey's narrow mindedness by Jojo on 02 Feb 2008

This is one of the most narrow minded statements. Amitabh Bachchan represents India. All parts of India for that matter. When will these politicians come out of their narrow mindsets and start to think big. And whats the deal about opposing Chhat pooja. This is ridiculous. This is one country, people can go anywhere, work anywhere. If we can not do that in our own country, then we should stop calling ourselves united and stop glorifying slogans like unity in diversity etc. All major cities in India are what they are because of contribution from people across the country and it is foolish to call Indians 'outsiders' in that city.

Big 'B" UP interests upsets Raj Thackery by Manish Kinhikar on 02 Feb 2008

It is the most idiotic comment by shri Raj Thackery. It is just a maverick ploy to provide some fodder to disgruntled ans un employed youths who are his followers. The comments has no merit and is ameturish in nature. Better ignore than ponder.

India next super power by raj shanti on 02 Feb 2008

Exhorting only to Hindus and Sikhs to unite will not help India to move and progress forward. There are Muslims and other minorities who are to be taken along for India to progress and become next super and economic power in the world. We Indians hv to forget the castism, regionalism, communalism etc to become the next super power of the world.

Maharasthra for Marathi by raj shanti on 02 Feb 2008

I agree with Mr Bal Thackrey that Mumbai should be for Maharashtrians and the local language Marathi should be the official language in the Govt and other institution. Atleast in Mumbai people do converse in various language like Gujrati, Hindi and English. But if you go in Gujrat or any state in south India, even if we converse in English of Hindi, the people there reply in their local language. The local language and people are given priority in these south indian and Gujrat cities. Even in Mumbai when you contact the Gujraties for business they will always ask you if you are a gujrati, if the person shares the same surname viz Shah, Doshi etc. I think the local Marathi people in Maharashtra are very tolerant as far as their language and equal opportunities are concern. Go to any business centre in Mumbai viz Stock exchange, textile market you will find Gujratis or other communities ruling the businesses there. Hence I feel if Mr Bal Thackrey insist for some reservation for the local people in Mumbai then i do not feel his demands are not justified.

Common man by arun on 03 Feb 2008

Are you Indian first or marathi first! Would you not like to be part of a large country like India than being part of a small state. It seems we are getting worse as we are developing. Look at europe. They have fought two world wars and still finding reasons to unite. Look at us. After getting kick in butt for 900 hundred years, we are finding reasons to split.

Maharashtra for Marathi by Mukul on 02 Feb 2008

If Gujratis are successful business man, it is because of the sheer business acumen and business skill, If Maharashtrians or any other community need to catch up with them, they need to be hardworking, and also have the knack of making big in business world, This s the world of global competitiveness, not of excuses that someone is sealing your bread, Get smart.

blind marathi raj shanti by klipsch on 02 Feb 2008

raj shani... you need to take the blind off your eyes and step back a little in history. first of all, mumbai was "built" (in business terms) by gujratis and sindhis in british raj. brits asked gujratis and sindhis to make use of bombay port as their logistical hub connecting east

maharashtra for marathi by srnivas on 02 Feb 2008

Sorry raj shanti you are mistaken.Tamilnadu is ruled by non tamilians for the last 40 years right from karunanidhi to jayalalitha.Rajnikant was also in the fray.U think what tamilnadu would have undergone in the last 40 years. In ur view rajnikant can contest only from maharashtra and not from tamilnadu.I think in my view rajnikant is a indian and he will contest election from any where in india. In chennai we have english boards in all shops and buses and only people from other states who settled in tamilnadu always try to arouse tamil fanatism and not people like me who are real tamilians and whose mother tongue is tamil.

dfg by fd on 02 Feb 2008

mr raj shanti..if so .. then recall all ur peoples from other states.and not to do any business or relation with other langvage people..let see how u can breath...lets see wat will be the seen in mumbai..lets see..

Bal Thackrey should think Beyond Maharastra by Dr. Rajat on 02 Feb 2008

Shiv Sena should exploit this situation by supporting non-Marathis and unifying Mumbai. Mumbai exclusively for Marathis makes no sense, where Gujrati alone constitute 30% of the population. Mumbai is Mumbai because of the fact that it is the financial capital of India. If you make it exclusive place for Marathis, it will eventually reduce to just another state capital and Marathis will be the biggest losers. Even propaganda of Marathaisation will repel many investments day by day. There are so many other competing places in India right now, Bangalore is one of them. Apart from all these things, there is another very important issue. Who succeeds Advani will depend on who exceeds Modi at the center and there is only one leader capable of competing Modi and that is Bal Thackrey. If Shiv Sena works in tandem with BJP and non-Marathis, the day will come soon when Bal Thackrey or Uddhav Thackrey will be crowned as the Prime Minister of India.
