Bose expressed concern over the fate of thousands of students who have certificates from the Primary Teachers Training Institute (PTTI), but cannot get jobs due to legal problems. Of the 131 PTTIs in the state, only 20 are recognised by the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE). The state government has granted permission to many private institutions for conducting primary teacher’s training.
Currently, representatives of the West Bengal Primary Teachers Training Students Union (WBPTTSU) are struggling against the embargo imposed on the PTTI.
Bose said about 45,000 teaching posts are vacant in the state and about 2,000 schools do not have any teachers. “I don’t know how these schools will function in the new academic year,” he said.
School education minister Partho De said it was difficult to upgrade the infrastructure of government schools to bring them on par with private schools.“We need more students participation and with a dearth of teachers, we will try to fill the vacuum with part-time teachers and voluntary retired teachers,” said De.
