Blame CPM if LDF breaks, fumes CPI

Thiruvananthapuram/New Delhi Seat-sharing talks in the ruling LDF appeared to be tottering on Friday with the CPI threatening to field candidates in all constituencies of the CPM in the Lok Sabha polls if it was not allowed to contest the Ponanni seat.

"There is no going back on our demand for four seats including Ponnani. We will not surrender to the CPM's strategy of containing the partners. We are ready to face any consequences arising from our decision," CPI state Secretary Veliyam Bhargavan told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram.

In Delhi, some members of the CPM Politburo, including General Secretary Prakash Karat, discussed the issue with senior leader M K Pandhe saying the party was hopeful that the issue would be "resolved at the state level".

"We are still hopeful that the issue will be resolved locally. We should try to maintain our unity till the end. I hope common sense will prevail," he told reporters. The CPM has decided to field a "common LDF independent" in Ponnani, represented by CPI in the 14th Lok Sabha, as a tactical move to muster Muslim support from parties like the PDP of Abdul Nasser Madani.

Bhargavan said the CPI would field its nominees in all the seats except those allotted to the non-CPM LDF allies JD(S) and Kerala Congress (Joseph) faction. The party executive would meet on March 16 to select candidates, he said.

After the politburo meeting, Karat is understood to have had a telephonic conversation with CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan to resolve the crisis.

CPI leader D Raja said "we are asking for four seats like last time. These include Ponnani. We should have a say in deciding as to who we should put up as a candidate there."

"The CPM should agree to this or take the responsibility for the consequences," the CPI leader said in New Delhi. Besides Ponnani, the CPI fought 2004 polls from Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram and Mavalikkara constituencies.

In Kozhikode, the CPM wants to field its nominee but JD(S), which won the seat last time, persisted with its demand to contest from the constituency.

Asked if the CPI central leadership would agree to parting of ways by the two main Communist parties, Bhargavan shot back saying "I am part of the Central leadership".

Coming out strongly against CPM's attitude towards seat sharing, Bharghavan said it has become a practice for CPM to take away the seats of its allies. "They took the seats of RSP, Kerala Congress (S) and also that of JD(S). Now they are trying to snatch the seats of CPI," he said, adding "our party will not allow this to happen.”

Asked whether the development means breaking up of the Front, he shot back, "what else could this mean." It was CPM's responsibility to see that the coalition is not broken, he said. "In case it breaks, CPM will be responsible," he added.

"The CPM has crossed all limits of coalition principles and do you think we should suffer the humiliation," the Kerala CPI leader said.

Bharghavan also said CPM has not learnt lessons from the experience of 1965 and 1970, when CPI was out of LDF in the state.

He said "CPI-M candidates would not win from any of the seats in Kerala without the support of CPI. The CPI would lose three of its seats, but it is sure that CPM will loose all its seats".

Blame CPM if LDF brakes- CPI by Wasoo Kamulkar on 14 Mar 2009

I fully agree with Hero Vaz. The CPM. the CPI and their allied comrades like the Forward Block; ought to decompose . The only worry for the Indians would be that the stench shouldn't linger on in Kerala and the Vanga for a long time. The process should be precipitated in such a way that without touching the holy land of Tibbat; the carbon dioxide should encompass Beijing, Sinkiang and Shanghai.

LDF in death throes? by Hero Vaz on 13 Mar 2009

It is time for the Left Front to disintegrate and decompose to make the political scene less dirty.

State of communism in Kerala today by KVSKumar on 13 Mar 2009

In Kerala, the CPM could have a good scope of repeating the last victory had it allowed the CM, Mr. VS Achchuthanandan to govern the state, instead of giving its State Secretary and his pony cabinet ministers all freedom to twist the wrist of that poor octogenarian. The people of the state are well aware of this truth and they will give to the party the rebuke that it begged for. Had there not been super CM over the elected CM, the party surely would neither have seen itself in this sorry situation where all the small members of the Left Front are showing more muscle, nor would it need to forge an unholy alliance with a sundry party like PDP. At this rate communism in Kerala is heading towards museum.

CPI-CPM clash by ravi on 13 Mar 2009

Dear sir,the real reason behind CPM-CPI issue is not just over a L.S. seat which they never one.But the hidden agenda of CPM state secretary and polit beuro member Mr.Pinarayi Vijayan, who is accused as 9th in a infamous Multicrore SNC-Lavalin corruption.Mr.Vijayan started making his own ground and space in CPMjust after the corruption took place.after a prolonged planning and strategy he captured CPM and filled all important positions in party with his loyalists. He fnished the CM,another PB member. The corruption issue is now going to court for prosecution of accused including Mr.Vijayan.The court gave ultimatum to cabinet to give sanction for prosecution. So CM,vijayans, opponent in party may be supported by CPI,JD(S),RSP ministers in cabinet in which CPM ministers may object. So Mr.Vijayan want to get his route clear.so it is easy by cuting the CPI,JD seats so that they may be provoced amd can be ousted.a

POSSIBILITIES ARE OPEN by K Sundar on 13 Mar 2009

It is all about a game of numbers in which principles and ideologies go for a toss. Given the diverse populace such as in India, this fragmentation is quite natural. It is only after elections, people are going to witness the real tamasha with alliance crumbling like a pack of cards. One does not know whom will align with whom ? Only two things are certain for now. One is that the Congress and BJP will not join hands and the Left at no cost will prop up a BJP Government. All other possibilities are open.

post poll alliance by L G Murthy on 13 Mar 2009

All the parties including CPI -the recent case, are trying for an alliance post poll scenerio. They are not forming alliance for contesting the Polls. Understanably, every MP will count for a benefifical bargain post poll adjustments. The parties with even 10 or 12 MPS will decide the Government and demand and get a price for their flocks.
