New Delhi, June 26: As the suspense over the nuclear deal continued, CPI said on Thursday that Congress should be blamed if the country is faced with snap Lok Sabha elections on the issue.

The party said the Left allies were not isolated on the nuclear deal issue, noting that it's stand on the agreement was appreciated by many and even forcing the government to take note of it.

"If early election becomes inevitable, Left parties should not be held responsible. Congress should be held responsible," CPI National Secretary D Raja told reporters.

Noting that they never created a crisis for the government inside or outside Parliament, he said the reasoning of the Left parties on the deal was based on "reasonable, firm and consistent" arguments.

On possible dates of election, he shot back, "where are the elections, when are the elections?" Asked whether BJP will gain from Left's stand, he said nobody can point fingers at the Left if the Government falls.

"We have supported the UPA for the past over four years with a purpose to keep BJP at bay. You cannot accuse us of aiding BJP," he said.

The saffron party has never raised any issue regarding people and they have never taken any stand on any issues, he added.

On reports that Samajwadi Party was getting closer to Congress on the nuclear deal, Raja said they were in touch with UNPA leaders on the matter.

"TDP chief (N Chandrababu Naidu) spoke to us. They (UNPA) are meeting on July three to chalk out their strategy," he said.
