The explosion was so powerful that the whole house got damaged, while a part of the roof collapsed to the ground. The incident reportedly occurred at around 1.15 in the afternoon when fire broke out accidentally in a pile of the fire-crackers.
While Satnam Singh alias Bittu (40), who was manufacturing crackers at his residence, died on the spot due to the intesity of the blast, his son Gauri (17) was also seriously injured. He was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and his condition is stated to be serious. Rano, wife of the deceased, also received burns on her face but her condition was stable.
The neighbours of the deceased said the raw material used in making crackers somehow caught fire and resulted in the blast of a gas cylinder.
DSP Paramjit Singh said the police have started proceedings under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). SSP R K Jaiswal, SP City II Harish Kumar and SDM (East) Jagwinderjit Singh Grewal also visited the spot of the incident and took stock of the situation.
