Islamabad, March 2: At least 20 people were killed and scores more injured when a suicide bomber attacked a traditional tribal meeting in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, a security official said.

"At this point, we have reports of over 20 dead and scores of wounded," the official, who requested not to be identified, told Reuters.

"We are trying to get information. Intial reports suggest it was suicide attack," Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema said.

The blast took place when tribesmen were holding a jirga, or traditional meeting, to discuss the security situation in the tribal region of Dera Adamkhel.

Another official said an emergency had been declared at hospitals in neighbouring towns

Over 450 people have been killed in militant related violence this year alone. A suicide bomb campaign targetting security forces intensified after the army stormed Islamabad's Red Mosque last July to crush a militant student movement.

A suicide attack on a police funeral in northwest Pakistan killed at least 38 people on Friday, while on Monday, the army's top medical officer was killed in a bomb attack in Rawalpindi.

The escalating violence has raised concern about the stability of the nuclear armed state as it passes through a period of political transition, with doubts over how long President Pervez Musharraf can hold onto power after his allies lost a Parliamentary election on Feb. 18.

Every day scores of people are being killed in Islamic countries including Pakistan where Islam is believed to be a religion of "peace".  What an irony that for 1400 years the adherents of this faith have practiced nothing but death and destuction of humanity to propagate their religion! Please practice nonviolence for God's sake.

Islam by RS on 03 Mar 2008

Say whatever you want to say against Islam. It is a religion of peace and will remain religion of peace. For last 1400 year, Islam has been opposed, suppressed oppressed, but its has only expanded and now one of the fastest growing religion in the world. Specially in the west where it is hated most, every day people are converting to Islam. The media specially Indian express has been propogating and printing hate messages and comments from the majority community but it will hv no affect whatsover on this religion which teaches truth. It is not a fairy tale religion where irrational theology is taught and propogated. It is a practical religion and covers the entire gamut of the soceity and community living. It preaches to believe in one god and and teaches to live righteously and with dignity in this world.

pakistan and Islam. by GOOD INDIAN on 03 Mar 2008

Pakistanis and Saudis are a crazy lot. They should be boycotted all over the world.because they follow the deobandi style of fanatic islam.every sane muslim should stand up and thrash these bastards physically for instant salvation or to earn a place in the muslim heaven ,where ever that is.this religion of peace is , was and will always be at odds with the world and even within it`s own followers because it was spread by the sword.the best example of islam is the so called palestianian(holy) cause, which is morally bankrupt and only spreads violence.the day muslims realise this truth there will be peace. If muslims take the indian non violent struggle as their example to solve their grievences then maybe there will be peace within/out islam.the problem with their(muslim) world is not the illiterate and the uneducated, but the highly literate
