Karachi, June 3: Detained for possessing contraband, Pakistani pacer Mohammad Asif will know later this afternoon what fate has in store for him with a local magistrate court in Dubai due to announce a verdict on his case.

Asif has been detained in Dubai since Sunday for possessing illegal drugs.

The authorities in Dubai have conducted a blood test on Asif but results have not been divulged yet.

Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board said the Pakistan embassy in the United Arab Emirates and the foreign office were pursuing the case and awaiting a verdict from a local court later in the afternoon.

The PCB has also rescheduled its press conference for 4.30 PST with indications that if the Dubai magistrate court finds Asif guilty the Board could also promptly ban him on Tuesday.

The Board has sent one of its senior officials, Nadeem Akram, to Dubai to coordinate with the Pakistan embassy officials and resolve the issue.

Interestingly, when contacted in Dubai and asked about what substance had been recovered from Asif, Akram said a small quantity of the substance was found from his wallet and it was a medicine prescribed by a local Hakeem for Asif.

"He was carrying this substance in very small quantity in his wallet for the last four or five months and even forgot about it. He is also not sure what it is and it was prescribed to him for treatment of his elbow injury," Akram said.

"We have sent his blood and urine samples for test and so far we have not got the results," Akram said.
