The victim, Nadan Singh Rawat, worked as a domestic help in a house in Mahaveer Enclave. Police said Rawat was headed for the local market when the accident occurred at 6.40 am.
According to eyewitnesses, Rawat swerved his cycle to change lanes near the red light. Rawat was apparently riding on the extreme left hand side, he swerved towards right to take a turn at the red light. The driver of Blueline bus on route number 761 (plying between Mangla Puri to Azadpur) could not control the bus and rammed into Rawat’s cycle, witnesses have told police.
The bus dragged the cycle for a few meters before stopping. Both the driver and the conductor of the bus fled from the spot. Rawat was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospital in Hari Nagar, where he succumbed to injuries. The police later arrested the bus driver Satish Singh. He is also a resident of Mahaveer Enclave. The bus has been impounded.
“We have registered a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving at Dwarka Police Station and further inquiry will be conducted,” DCP (Southwest) Shalini Singh said. The police have informed Rawat's family in Garhwal region. His body will be preserved till the family gives permission for postmortem, police said.
The accident comes amid an ongoing traffic police and the Transport department drive, which has impounded over 500 buses in past one week. The drive was started after a Blueline bus killed seven persons at a traffic intersection in Badarpur on October 7.
