Bobby Jindal refuses Obama’s payout for Louisiana

Washington Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has announced that he will decline stimulus money specifically targeted at expanding state unemployment insurance coverage, becoming the first state executive to officially refuse any part of the federal government’s payout to states.

In a statement, Jindal, who is slated to give the Republican response to President Barack Obama’s message to Congress on Tuesday, expressed concern that expanding unemployment insurance coverage would lead to increased unemployment insurance taxes later on, Politico.com reported.

“The federal money in this bill will run out in less than three years for this benefit and our businesses would then be stuck paying the bill,” Jindal said.

“We must be careful and thoughtful as we examine all the strings attached to the funding in this package. We cannot grow government in an unsustainable way.”

Jindal is one of a small group of Republican governors, which includes South Carolina’s Mark Sanford and Mississippi’s Haley Barbour, who have said they might refuse some or all of the stimulus money targeted to their states.

In an interview Friday, Barbour said he, too, would likely decline funds for broadening access to unemployment insurance.

If you were Unemployed by Unemployed in LA on 21 Mar 2009

I live in LA and I will be Unemployed next week. I have two kids in school and a wife of 9 years. My employer made bad business decisions and I have to suffer. My govenor could have helped me by increasing the max by $25 to a whopping $283 per week but instead he is playing politics. My family will not forget this in 2012.

Stimulus package for louisiana by mahrook on 20 Mar 2009

Utterly Stupid and upfront Arrogance.

Putting on a Front Governor Bobby J by Davie B on 26 Feb 2009

The Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is only putting on a front for the nation. He looks good to the nation, but damn the people of his state. They won't make him President. He thinks by not taking the stimulus money (or it seems he not taking it) would look good when he runs for President in 2012. He is a typical republican, damn the people lets as long as they put on a good front.

Jindal by Kathy A. on 25 Feb 2009

I don't think Americans want to hear what an Indian-American; it's even more remote than a black politicians. I'm sure he's very smart, but Americans like the whole package-charisma, etc. Jindal seems to intellectual.

Bobby J is Obama-Lite by Jeff Smith on 25 Feb 2009

Bobby Jindal is completely disingenuous - he says he's not taking Obama's money, yet on closer examination, he's accepting $3.3 billion of Obama's $3.4 billion in stimulus aid (that's 97%...yeah, that will show those dang Democrats!). He really just needs to shut up and get back to work. Last time I visited Louisiana (3 months ago), it was still an a$$-backward dysfunctional and corrupt outpost of America's hindquarters.Hey Bobby J - How about you fix the lower 9th Ward, then you might have some credibility?!

Another Shady Politician by VolleyShark on 25 Feb 2009

sure he passed up the $100 million unemployment assistance (for the real people in need)...but he was happy to take the $3.1 BILLION in other Federal Aid under the Obama plan...another shady politician, good at the double speak...

response by anna on 25 Feb 2009

What an idiot? I agree with a previous poster, cut his pay by 75% and let's see how he'll deal with it. Who the hell voted for him anyways?

Refusing What Money? by Peter Gottschalk on 25 Feb 2009

Bobby Jindal was careful not to mention the billions of dollars from, yes, Washington, that is pouring into his state right at this moment for on-going hurricane relief. I don't see him refusing any of this evil Washington spending. Why not Bob?

A man of integrity by Jim on 25 Feb 2009

Finally, someone with courage! Very few people go against Obama in any way, no matter how destructive is Obama's plan. My Governor, Bobby Jindal, is a man of courage and integrity, who refuses to simply follow the Pied Piper off the cliff like everyone else.GO BOBBY!

Republican Response by Bonnie N. Wommack on 25 Feb 2009

Honorable Governor:Your Republican Response to the Presiden's State of the Union message was wonderful. Your statement's gave back to me the hope for our great USA. I live in Morris County, Texas just across the border from your great state. We know what a change you have made in Louisiana. You are going to be our future leader, so don't let the Media discourage you. Keep up your great work---I salute you,

jindal by wayne grover on 25 Feb 2009

Jindal is an idiot. If this is the best the republicans have to offer, they REALLY ARE in trouble!!!!!!!!! This isn't the bottom of the barrel, it's below the bottom of the barrel. If he doesn't want to help the unemployed, fine. He will soon be unemployed as well. Louisiana will send him packing.

Stimulus by Dawud on 24 Feb 2009

The more states refuse it will be good for the states that need it. This mf sounds stupid. This money is for the suffering people that live in his state. He needs to stop the politicing and give the people what they need. Dumb a mf..

Republican rhetoric by John Smith on 23 Feb 2009

Don't take any of the money you damned moron!! I have a feeling you will be in the unemployment line soon!!! You republicans could all be replaced with tape recorders!! It is the same answer for every question!! It is pathetic what your party has become and of course their is a special place in hell for republicans!!

Jindall is right on ONE item by Jodyin D on 23 Feb 2009

It pains me to say that Jindal is right to refuse the unemployment expansion money. No matter how you look at it, it is a tax on businesses. In Louisiana and most states, unemployment mney cmes from businesses who pay a percentage of the first 7000 in cmpensation. The tax rate is determined by how much money people who have worked for you take in unemployment. No matter what, it is a tax increase on business.

Jindall is wrong by Eric on 25 Feb 2009

You are not correct here. If the unemployment is extended, the companies woulod have already paid their portion.

Bobby Tom by Miss Duffi on 23 Feb 2009

Bobby has run in the last 10 or more elections in Louisiana. He was DETERMINED to get his TOMing self . I don't even try to get the pronunciation of his last name right. I call him Bobby Tom, cause that's just what he is...Uncle Tom's adopted son!

President Obama by Elaine K. Hergert on 23 Feb 2009

IT IS SO SCARY TO HAVE A PRESIDENT THAT IS SO COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT! HE DOES'T HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE IN RUNNING ANYTHING - IT'S ABSOLUTELY SCARY! He is not going to budget for the war [Iraq

Obama vs Bush by Eric on 25 Feb 2009

There shouldnt have been a budget in the 1st place. He is pulling htem out. Bush cant manage anything, he spent billions on the war that should have been spent on our countries growth.

Look Who's Running for President! by Christine on 22 Feb 2009

It's not hard to tell who has Presidential aspirations for 2012, like the governor of Louisiana this morning on Meet The Press. His grandstanding about not accepting the allocation of the stimulus money for his state is not courageous on his part, it is the beginning of his campaign!I don't understand why a governor, in these economic times and with so many people suffering would not take the money and use it to relieve the economic pressure in their state (and from what I understand, Louisiana is not necessarily a wealthy state, by and large). This recession is nationwide, and I don't think any state is exempt from the wide-reaching effects of it.The reality is, most government money is granted on a use it or lose it basis. States have the ability to use the money for what benefits their states and let the rest go back. I'll bet you dollars to donuts, Louisiana will end up taking the money. If they don't, they need to oust their governor!

stimulus by billy rosenthal on 22 Feb 2009

maybe we should start cutting jindal pay buy 75 percent and let him feed his family on unemployment checks see how fast he changes his mind.

Jindal refuses Obama's payout by The All Knowing on 22 Feb 2009

The money offered by the Federal Government is not for Mr. Jindal, but for the millions of the unemployed in Louisiana. So how can he refuse the money in their name? If he refuses to give them this small relief, the would-be beneficiaries of this federal program will be certain to remember him at election time.

Jindal refuses Obama's payout by Gaga gamer on 22 Mar 2009

Well, yes, by 2012 they will remember. They will remmeber how Bobby refused the package and thereby helped Louisiana build their own economy and also ensured that they are not burdened by additional taxes.yes. By 2012, most states will be breaking their backs working out the heavy additional taxes, and Louisiana will then feel how much better off they are - and WHY.

RE: The All Knowing by halkilmer on 25 Feb 2009

Ummm... Jindal can refuse the money in the name of people of Louisiana because they elected him to represent them and govern them.

Keep it up, Bobby. by Red on 22 Feb 2009

Don't take any of it. Republican states like Mississippi, South Carolina and Louisiana hate the federal government so much, they should quit getting free rides from states like NY, IL and CA.

Bobby Jindal is a heroic! by scecil@i609.net on 21 Feb 2009

I love this guy! Bobby Jindal 2012! He is so honorable and so different from politics as usual -- refreshing! I think if the Federal gov't were truly fair, they would gracefully and respectfully keep the money that these governors are declining to take and put it back in the treasury where it belongs, which would save all the taxpayers some of that stimulus debt. That would be the noble thing for the Fed gov't to do.These are states that have a surplus. In good times and bad they do what it takes to balance their budgets -- these states and these governors should be respected for that, and should be held up as examples of good governance. States are supposed to be independent -- this is a republic and that is what our founding fathers intended. Once states sell their souls to the federal government the US is no longer what it was founded to be -- we become another step closer to a socialist "nanny state". People, banks, industries, and states all bailed out by the Feds.

no more repub in 2012 by jimmy on 24 Feb 2009

Repubs and their supporters would like nothing better than for President Obama stmi package to fail, thus causing the American families to fail, thus causing millions of people to lose their jobs and homes. In the last 8 years American families’ tax dollar supported two wars, bank robbers, CEO greed, etc. I would gladly use my tax return to assist many needed family. Neo-con need the American people to complain about a few tax dollars that will be use to assist the American people, hoping it will take their mind off of the billions dollar of welfare check has been received by corporation. This retired soldier pay taxes, and I don’t pay for the Repub to sit on their rear end and whine all day.All anyone would have to do is read some of the comments posted. Many of the neo-conservatives comments are dangerous close to the mind set of right wing extremists like Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. Many of us know too well about the terror in Oklahoma City.

Refusal of money...yeah right by Billyjack on 21 Feb 2009

Looks like he won't have a job for much longer. Dumb decision. For one person to refuse money that he himself has stated would last for 3 years...for unemployed people.....in this economy. Ha. He'll change his mind. I guarantee it. grandstanding is all this is. When its time to flip the bill for the unemployed, what is the state of LA gonna do..rely on its vast sums of wealth from its oil fields, movie studios, no...wait...corn production...all coming out its recently devastation from Katrina. Sounds like a way to allow folks to manipulate FEMA money to me.

governor bobby is only trying to win over the Gop by jimmy on 24 Feb 2009

I couldn't agree with you more. Your governor just like many repub doesn't care about the state of La.I have seen the condition of many places in La.Your governor would rather the people and the state go down in flame than work with our country new president.
