Washington 'The Immigrants', a book which cautions Indian parents who are in a hurry to marry off their daughters to NRIs not to fall for "the US and the dollar bait" has been released in Washington.

The book written by NRI attorney Anu Peshawaria, who once represented India in Wimbledon as a young tennis star, suggests parents to inquire enough about the groom or the family before marrying off their daughters to NRIs.

"Parents are in great hurry to marry off their daughters to NRI's, they fall for the USA and the dollar bait. They do not inquire enough about the groom or the family," Anu Peshawaria said after release of her at a function in Fremont, California this past weekend.

"That is one mistake every parent should avoid. Every time I meet a deserted woman, I wish her parents had at least inquired about the groom," she said.

"The real stories in the book can serve as warnings, read them and you would know the mistakes parents make, the traps that they fall into," Peshawaria said.

Former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, Sushmita Thomas, Consul General at the New York Consulate were among those attended the function, which was followed by a panel discussion on immigration in particular how to prevent fraudulent marriages.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul General Thomas suggested creating a easy accessible number like 311. This number will be linked to local police agency as a reporting of domestic violence, she said.

Marriages are made in Heaven by Swapan Chakravarthy on 03 May 2009

We all understand the concern. But why reflect on marriages in US or overseas grooms. I know of grooms in India who have been cheated and there is no recourse of law from the harassment induced by the bride's side on any number of issues. The moot question that I have for everyone with an opinion: how does one go about enquiring the background of the other side? In generations gone by it was done by elders who have for generation known the family. The situation for the last 30~40-years is that families have moved from place-to-place. Accurate references are not available and of course most referees give answers that are not committal. A typical one in Bengali goes as follows: we can never know what they cook in the kitchen! So to the author and Ms. Kiran Bedi and Ms. Thomas you all need to look at it from many perspectives. Admittedly, men allegedly cheat but so do women! And if you ask me nearly in the same proportion. Men do not scream and make noise about it. Women weep and pour their sporrows.Hence I have come to believe that marriages are made in Heaven.
