Police suspect that Subhendu Koley, a student of Janai High School near Chanditala, might have fled his home apprehending that he may not be able to do well in his physics examination. Family members, however, claim he has been kidnapped.
But they have not received a ransom call so far.
According to police, Subhendu left home around 5 pm on Monday, telling his mother that he was going to collect some notebooks from a friend Bikash Das, who also lives in the same area.
When he didn’t return, his father Pankaj Koley, an employee of the Post and Telegraph, went to Bikash’s house, only to be told that Subhendu hadn’t come there.
The boy’s uncle, Prasanta Koley, lodged a complaint at the Chanditala police station late on Monday.
The officer said Subhendu had called up his mother on Tuesday morning and told her that he will return within a day or two.
When she asked him if he will appear for the physics paper the same day, Subhendu disconnected the line.
Investigations revealed that the call was made from a telephone booth near the Sealdah Railway Station.
District police officers and their counterparts in Kolkata visited some hotels near Sealdah Railway Station but failed to trace him.
Officers of the CID were informed about the incident on Tuesday.
Interestingly, police added that Subhendu had secured more than 70 per cent in his Tests .
He had cleared the Madhyamik examination with letter marks in five subjects.
“Though we suspect he has run away from home as he could not take the exam pressure, a case of kidnapping can’t be ruled out. No foul play has been detected so far,” said the police.
