Brash driver takes constable ‘for a ride’

Chandigarh, January 10 A Reckless driver of a Tata Indica car, in an attempt to evade challan for a violation, hit a traffic constable and carried him on the bonnet of his car for more than a kilometre at the Chandigarh-Mohali border, till he was caught by officials of the Traffic Police and Police Control Room. The driver’s accomplice managed to escape from the spot. The constable sustained minor injuries.

The incident took place this afternoon, when Constable Praveen, Surinder and Praveen Kumar were on duty at the T point, Colony No 5. A Tata Indica (PB-65-C-3171), driven by Manpreet Singh, a Sector 71 Mohali resident, came from the sector 44-45 dividing road side.

The driver was using his phone while driving, which was noticed by Constable Praveen, who signaled Manpreet to stop his vehicle at the junction. The constable stood in front of the car, signalling him to slow down. Manpreet stopped, but before Praveen could approach the driver’s door, he zoomed ahead, lifting Praveen off his feet and on to the bonnet.

The other constable chased the car on his scooter, after informing a nearby PCR vehicle, and managed to stop the Indica near the Mataur barrier.

Manpreet was nabbed on the spot and arrested on charges of attempt to murder and restricting a government servant from performing his official duty. His vehicle too was impounded by the police.

Manpreet has cleared his 10+2 exams and is presently pursuing a computer course in Chandigarh. He was going towards home with one of his friends in the car when the incident took place.
