The Kane family lives in the four-storey Bhagirathi building in the Lal Chowk area of Kalyan. On Tuesday around 5.45 a.m., when the milkman arrived, he found that the flat of Shrirang Kane on the fourth floor was open and robbers were inside his house. Shrirang was out of town.
“The milkman found it fishy as he had already delivered the milk at Shrirang’s father’s (Sakharam) house who resides in the same building. Also, Shrirang’s father had informed the milkman that his son was out of town,” said Anita, Shrirang’s sister-in-law. The milkman immediately informed Shrirang’s cousin Prasad who stays in an adjacent flat. Prasad informed his father (Prabhakar Kane) who resides in the same building. He later tried to open the door of Shrirang’s flat but found it bolted from inside.
“Of the two robbers, one escaped, but the second one attacked my brother-in-law (Prasad) with a chopper and injured his hand,” said Anita.
After hearing the hue and cry, three senior citizens of the Kane family — Sakharam, Prabhakar and Bapu Limye tried nabbing the robbers. But one of the robbers pushed Sakharam and Limye. Sakharam fell down and suffered a minor head injury. Limye fractured his finger.
On Monday night, there were attempted robberies in five other flats in the same area. The police are ascertaining whether the same gang was behind the other attempts.
“The senior citizens have shown great courage by trying to avert a robbery and it’s quite commendable,” said Subhash Patil, Senior Police Inspector of the Bazarpeth police station of Thane. “They have described the robbers and we have prepared their sketches. We have also sent teams to nab them and we hope to arrest them by tonight,” he said.
