Kolkata, November 4 The CPM Politburo member Brinda Karat accused the Opposition of conspiring against the people of Nandigram on Sunday.

She also justified the need for deployment of CRPF in Nandigram to restore peace and normalcy in the trouble-torn areas of Nandigram.

Without naming the Trinamool Congress, Karat said a party was resorting to “opportunistic” politics by forming a Mahajot.

“They are hatching a conspiracy and the poor people become victims of their gun trotting and opportunistic politics. Those who are doing this should be given the Dum Dum dawai treatment (a severe bashing),” said Karat.

She said this in a rally of the All India Democratic Women’s Association at Dum Dum in the northern fringe of the city in the presence of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

She also slammed the Union Minister P R Das Munshi for his “opposition” in sending central forces to the state.

“If this kind of situation takes place in other state and the concerned state government sought central forces, any central ministers hailing from that state would welcome such decision, but Dasmunshi is opposing it,” she said.

She also pointed out how the pro-active Calcutta High Court was quick to order a CBI probe into the Nandigram violence without consulting the state government.

“But even three years after the Gujarat riots, a CBI enquiry still eludes the victims. Why should two sets of rules be applied in the same country?,” she asked.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee launched a verbal attack on the United States and criticised the Centre for playing to the tunes of Bush and his administration.

“No country has benefited from an association with the US. We have to strengthen the Left movement,” said Bhattacharjee.

The chief minister also urged AIDWA to take up women’s issues like domestic violence and dowry more strongly.

She also criticised the opposition demand for a CBI probe into Nandigram violence and said that the CBI inquiry was not ordered into the violence in Godhra carnage in Gujarat, even after some years.

“Why two sets of rules will apply in the same country,” she asked.
