London Pressing China to resolve the ‘underlying issues’ in Tibet, British Premier Gordon Brown on Monday hoped that Beijing would make ‘rapid progress’ in its human rights track record.

Addressing a joint press conference with visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Brown indicated that his country sought improvement on the human rights front in the world's most populous nation.

"The UK will continue through our regular dialogue to seek rapid progress towards all international human rights standards and I urge further dialogue on the Chinese government to resolve the underlying issues in Tibet," the Prime Minister said.

Wen's visit has been marred by anti-China protests in London, which saw around 50 pro-Tibetan demonstrators gather outside 10 Downing Street on Monday.

Five protestors were arrested after they held demonstrations on Sunday.

Tibet saw massive anti-China protests in March 2008 resulting in a harsh clampdown from Chinese authorities.

The torch run for the Beijing Olympics had to be heavily guarded after it was attacked by pro-Tibet protestors in London and Paris.

Brown also called for greater collaboration on trade and commerce between the UK and China, saying the two countries shared a determination to reverse the economic downturn, British media reported.

"Concerted efforts" were needed to "address the common challenges that we face," Wen said, adding that the economic crisis had revealed the "dangers of a totally unregulated market".

China must learn that profit is not of any use without human rights.

Freedom by Christopher on 12 Feb 2009

From history we see and learn that Freedom and Equality are most valued by people . Time and again the people have won after struggles and fights against tyrants , colonisers and repressive governments. Thus was USA , France,SouthAfrica,Kenya,Uganda,India and a host of other nations born into Freedom. It is an extremely usual and a very high-probability event. In waiting again are suppressed and bullied nations of Burma ,Tibet , Eelam , Taiwan , Kurdistan and a host of other promising nations in the throes of birth pains before they too are born into Freedom .

There would have been no Tibet issue if the UK and its allies had taken timely action to stop the Chinks from swallowing Tibet.

Bravo, Mr Brown by Shashank Vagal on 03 Feb 2009

If a man is saying something in our favour, it is wise not to antagonise him. The Chinks must leave Tibet or soon they would be all over us...As good as a writing on the wall. If our leaders are helpless against China (cowards), cheer up the one who is trying to do a fine job for us. I feel grateful to Mr Brown all other things notwithstanding.
