London, May 7: Just months after advising Nicolas Sarkozy against remarrying following his acrimonious divorce with Cecilia, the flamboyant French President's mother has showered accolades on her new daughter-in-law, Carla Bruni.

"Carla is a girl who possesses an exceptional number of qualities - she's very beautiful, very intelligence, very funny and very kind. Not bad for a lady," Andre Sarkozy was quoted by The Daily Telegraph as saying.

Sarkozy (53), who divorced his second wife Cecilia last October, tied the knot with former supermodel Bruni in February, becoming the first French President to marry while holding that country's highest constitutional office.

Bruni has earlier been linked with rock stars Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, as well as noted American businessman Donald Trump and French former socialist Prime Minister Laurent Fabius.

Bruni has a kid from a previous relationship, while Sarkozy has two grown-up sons from his first marriage, and a third son from his marriage to Cecilia.

However, not only Sarkozy's mother praised Bruni, the 81-year-old has also showed her unswerving support for her son, defending his "Hyper President" style, at a time when the French President's approval ratings are at an all-time low.

Dismissing her son's unpopularity as nothing out of the ordinary, Andre Sarkozy said, "It's the rule for all presidents."

She also added that he still had four years in which to push through his reformist agenda.
