Ghaziabad Not many would quit a well-paying job in an American IT company to sit for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations. Indirapuram (Ghaziabad) resident Shubhra Saxena did, and having emerged the UPSC topper in the results declared on Monday, she says it was a risk worth taking — to serve the rural masses.

“I wasn’t able to serve these (rural) people while being in the IT field,” Saxena, 30, told Newsline on Monday evening, “so I decided to quit and appear for the civil services examinations.” Saxena, who quit her job in the US software company Computer Sciences Corporation’s (CSC) Noida firm, said she wants to work for the deprived masses, and that rural development schemes “work better if we have devoted people to implement the policies”.

An IIT-Roorkee alumnus, Saxena joined Oracles in Hyderabad in 2002 but shifted to Noida when her software engineer husband Shashank began working for CSC. “Soon, Shubhra too joined her husband in the same company,” her brother Rahul Chandra Saxena said, “but she was not satisfied with her job. Itching to serve the rural population, she would deliver free lectures to students who came to her for guidance on rural development schemes.”

Saxena gives all credit to her family for having faith in her while she was preparing for the civil services. “My family, and especially my husband, worked hard alongside me,” she says. “I had to stay with my mother and study; my husband Shashank boosted my morale during those days.”

I want to convey my best wishes to Mrs Saxena for her feat PLS NOTE its not a mean thing to acheive. But her real test would be after she joins the IAS and whether she would be part of the corrupt system or not. If she doesnt become part of the rotten system then all her high sounding statements are correct otherwise its just another bureaucrat/politician who has topped the UPSC giving flowery statements. BEST OF LUCK MRS SAXENA.

She did not quit her US job to serve villages. If you read the rest of the article carefully, she moved back to India for her husband's job and only after that (cos she was not satisfied with her job in India) appeared for the exam. Not to take any credit away from this obviously bright and hard working woman, let us get over our misplaced pride that anyone quits the American Dream to serve villagers. That is just bureaucratic nonsense!
