New Delhi, June 4: Sacked Assam Education Minister Ripun Borah and a co-accused were produced before a Delhi court on Wednesday for allegedly offering a bribe of Rs 17 lakh to a CBI officer for influencing a murder probe.

Additional Sessions Judge R K Yadav, allowing the plea of the defence counsel Ramesh Gupta to take some more time to advance arguments on the application of the probe agency, fixed the matter for noon.

The CBI had lodged an FIR on June 2 against Borah and two others including a journalist for allegedly paying a bribe of Rs 17 lakh to an officer of the investigating agency to negotiate the outcome of an eight-year-old murder case of a student Union leader Danial Toppo.

Borah, and his associate Ramesh K Maheswari were arrested from Sunder Nagar in South Delhi when the minister was about to pay the illegal gratification to the officer.

Borah is a suspect in the case in which Toppo, the district President of the All Assam Tea Tribe Students' Union, was killed during the 1996 Assembly polls in Assam.

The CBI has booked the accused under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for conspiring to bribe the probe agency officer.
