Chandigarh, August 28 The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against former Haryana Additional Advocate General Sanjeev Bansal and others who allegedly tried to bribe a Punjab and Haryana High Court judge.

The case has been registered under Sections 8 and 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code.

Other than Bansal, those booked by the CBI are Prakash Ram, Bansal’s assistant, and Ravinder Singh, a Delhi-based hotelier.

UT Administrator and Punjab Governor, Gen S F Rodrigues (Retd) had referred the case to the CBI after consultation with the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana, Tirath Singh Thakur. The Supreme Court has set up a separate three-member panel to conduct an internal investigation into the case.

The case came to light after Prakash Ram allegedly delivered a packet containing Rs 15 lakh at the residence of High Court judge Nirmaljit Kaur on August 13.

The judge reported the matter to the Chandigarh Police, which claimed to have found out during investigations that the money was meant for another HC judge, Nirmal Yadav. While Bansal resigned from the post of Additional Advocate General, Haryana, after registration of the case against him, Yadav proceeded on leave.
