New Delhi With the Maoists getting bolder and carrying out attacks at will, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Thursday gave its approval for launching major anti-Naxalite operations in the rebel strongholds across the country. The approval came on a day when Naxalites gunned down 17 policemen in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra.

Sources said the dates of these anti-Naxalite operations would be decided later keeping the element of surprise in view. The only item discussed at the CCS, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was the security challenge posed by Naxalism, sources added.

Centering around the incidents of Naxalite violence like the one where a police officer in Jharkhand was beheaded, the discussion explored ways to deal with the problem. The two-hour-long meeting, however, did not discuss the proposal to give the IAF permission to fire at the Maoists.

The CCS approval to the anti-Naxalite operations came a day after Union Home Minister P Chidambaram warned the Maoists to “abjure” violence or face action.

According to the Union Home Ministry’s plan, the anti-Naxalite operations would be undertaken in states affected by the Left-wing extremism and would be assisted by CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), a central force.

The Home Ministry went to the CCS for its approval after the plan was discussed threadbare with Chief Ministers of the Naxalite-affected states in the second week of September. Officials said the plan envisaged the anti-Naxal operations to be led by state police while central forces would lend assistance.

Meanwhile, following the Gadchiroli attack, the Centre has rushed BSF personnel to the area. Sources said that the Centre was nervous about sending in the BSF to the area given the fact that the force was not familiar to the area and had been sent to Maharashtra for election duty originally.

Sources said several alerts for possible Naxalite strikes in Gadchiroli, Gondia and neighbouring areas in the run-up to the Maharashtra Assembly elections had been sounded recently.

Naxal menace by Bikash Kumar Das on 11 Oct 2009

Surprising!!! When ULFA was banned in 29 Dec 1990 by the union Home Minister Buta Singh as well later Mufti, the entire people of Assam was termed as ULFA and anti Indian and Assam was brought under AFSPA.Indian Armed Forces was licensed to kill any talented Assamese without mercy.IAF LMG mounted helicopters and Armoured tanks was used in Lakhipathar jungles.Since then brutal killings going on by the security forces.BUT- why now inspite of having so much worst kilings in Orissa ,Maharastra,Bihar and part of karnataka, Govt is unwilling to use tanks, LMG mounted IAF choppers???? Are naxals more god to Govt than people of North east??I would love to have god response from all the readers. Its an important milestone on this topic. Why naxals and Maoist are taken as next of kin of Delhi??Why people of NE are treated as enemy No.1 of Delhi?? why people of NE are worst than pakistan today??

A plea to the government by Chaitanya on 09 Oct 2009

Farmers are committing suicide because of our incompetent government at local, state and national level. Take any party in this country has done nothing to save farmers. Today these farmers have taken up the guns to address their own issues. I feel sad for the people who have died but who's fault is it?Sharad pawar should hang his head in shame. 60 years have passed by when our country got independence and we havnt been able to address the problems of our own farmers but it has gone even worse. They killed 17 police men but because of our government more than 1 lakh farmers have committed suicide or I should say killed by government in last decade.Dont kill naxal it is not the solution. Address the problem of the farmers that is the only solution.

Prepostureous by Ravi Dikshit on 09 Oct 2009

IAF Chiefs Statement "IAF will not go for Rambo type Operations against Naxals Massacring innocent Citizens and Defense Ministry's support is PREPOSTEROUS and goes against major state function of protecting Innocent Civilians and force fighting these unlawful activities. Both must understand the basic function of safety of citizens from foreign or internal aggression. All types of forces have to be used to fight evil of Law barkers who keep on massacring law enforcement agencies and civilians.Sooner the government realize better it is.

The Naxal menace by Pratap Nair on 09 Oct 2009

Mr. Rahul gandhi has recently observed and rightly so that the Naxal menace has arisen due to State Government benefits not reaching the poor masses. He probabaly thought that this was restricted to states being controlled by Non Congress Governments. However this problem is also very much prevalent in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra which are states ruled either by the Congress as a single party or with its ally. It is very easy to eradicate the Naxal armies, but how does that benefit the poor tribals that the Naxals are fighting for? Therefore the basic approach is wrong. It should be a two pronged approach. Eradicate the Naxals and the poverty of the people that they are fighting for. Our politicians have declared wealth in crores and some in hundreds of crores. How has so much money come to their possession? Why do they not contribute all this wealth to a Central fund which may be set up and address the grievances of the poorest of the poor. Are the politicians really interested?
