New Delhi The CPI said on Saturday that the Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami's recommendation for the removal of his colleague Navin Chawla has created suspicions of political motive and demanded that Parliament should now examine the power and functions of the Election Commission.

"The very timing of such a recommendation smacks of political motive, if at all. ... Time has come to examine the appointment and removal, powers and functions of the EC by Parliament," CPI National Secretary D Raja said from Tamil Nadu.

The CPI leader said the CEC knew that he was going to retire in three months and also that the country has to go for general elections in almost the same time.

"And at this time, he makes such a recommendation on the basis of a BJP complaint. He understands it could have serious constitutional and political implications," Raja said, adding that this leads to "serious suspicion about the political motivation."

Time has come for Parliament to discuss the power and functions of the EC as it has done in the matter of judges and their impeachment, he said.

Ask Raja to buy a new cell phone. It is getting cheaper. These people are used to live few decades behind the other indians. this Chowla's only merit is that he was with Indira (and her Chmcha at the time CPI, Achutha Menon included) during the black rule called Emergency.

throw out chawla by manohar sharma on 01 Feb 2009

Dear Raja,In the light of your party's support against the freedom of India, intellectual support to forming of pakistan, support of EMERGENCY in1975,dubious support of China in 1962,your comments are not surprising.CEC is the only honest functionary of this otherwise spineless government.Just please shut up and thank God that you are in India ,I am sure you know how are the commies treated in Pakistan

CEC's recomendation to remove one EC by V.Shanmuganathan on 01 Feb 2009

What was Mr,Gopalsamy doing for the last one year? It seems that he purposedly waited for and acted according to his BJP bosses who appointed him as EC. Mr,Gopalsamy's sudden action even after knowing that the CEC has no power to dismiss any ECs shows that he has some politically motivated ideas and political considerations.

These people always make speech after the train left platform, like NSG. No national interest is served by this act. People should teach a lessons to them

Throw out Chawla by Sumanyu on 31 Jan 2009

Navin Chawla is a congress politician. He can'nt be a member of CEC. The President needs to throw him out and save the EC from politicisation. If this is not corrected Congress will pollute each and every democratic organisation in this country. Its a party full of greedy leeches. Greedy for power.

CHAWLA SHOULD GO by Ravi on 31 Jan 2009

Raja is notorious for highly partisan comments and in the process looks like a Headless Chicken. Mr. Gopalswamy is the right person to take right decision regarding recommending or not continuation of chawla in EC. Raja has taste for big mouthing with political motives and most of the time that smacks objectiveness. Chawla, right from the days of Emergency, is a compulsive offender known for manipulations, partisan approach and political activism. In the post-emergency an Enquiry committee had declared that THIS MAN WAS UNFIT TO HOLD ANY OFFICE OF PUBLIC SERVICE. And later on several occasions, one or the other political parties have complained about his undesirable political overtures in matters of EC. Two years ago nonetheless "secular press" Times of India had brought to light the manipulations by Chawla of worst kind. It was a fit case for his immediate removal from govt. service but in India all the tainted people get new lease of lives. And Chawla escaped.

CPI is out ot destroy our system by Kaviraj Pirzada on 31 Jan 2009

I am amazed at the CPI siding with Navin Chawla. Is it because of a devilish desire to destroy one of our best Constitutional systems?

Ill timed recommendation of CEC by dp karkara on 31 Jan 2009

D Raja's comments need to be taken seriously. This is no time for the CEC to raise this issue when the elections are so near. This will raise unnecessary controversies. However great responsibility devolves upon Navin Chawla to come clean and settle his differences with the CEC and also try to present an image different from his past reputation.

cecs a shame on india by harun on 31 Jan 2009

for once you are speaking up.RAJA.The day Advani made him the CEC it was clear that Gopalsami had a political agenda,When the apex court paid no heed to CECs charges what was the need for him to write to the govt.IS it because HIS bosses in the BJP who met him asked him to do so.The institution of CEC has been tarnished by Gopalsami who going home shortly. How did the cpi ot realise it when they voted with THE BJP.Now they see political motives when was this not the case, every time its the case. The BJP has left the judiciary if they work on them then it will be complete.Gopalsami has proven to be the true soldier of the divisive forces and brought shame to his office.Raja and company can realise that if all out efforts arnt made the country wil be heading for talibanisation.

EC Chawla's Removal by Ananth Seth on 31 Jan 2009

Raja, your own utterances smack of political motives. Instead of trying to dwelve in to the reasons behind such a serious devlpmnt, you start crowing that "it is political" "it is political". Why dont you consider this scenario: CEC Gopalswami is an upright man who was afraid that continuance of Chawla might have resulted in the outcome of the polls not being a true reflection of the janta's will and hence he ought to be removed before the polls". BTW Raja, planning another handshake with Congress before the polls?

Dubious Past of Navin Chawla by Shirish on 31 Jan 2009

Navin Chawla should never have been in the EC in the first place. His actions during the emergency (1975-77) were notorious. Congress made him EC in 2004 specifically keeping in mind that such a move would ensure that 2009 general elections are held with Chawla in the CEC chair. Every patriotic Indian who knows what emergency was should work overtime to see to it that such a dubious person never sits in EC. As for CPI reaction, it is no surprise. CPI had supported emergency in 1975. So they should support Chawla!

D Raja is a corrupt politician by GK on 31 Jan 2009

D Raja is a communist hence a corrupt who always sees everything with suspicion. D Raja along with Naveen Chawla should be thrown out from public space.
