In a front page article, The Washington Post said CIA "orchestrated back-channel intelligence exchanges" between India and Pakistan with the top American intelligence agency itself playing the role of a neutral arbitrator.
"The exchanges, which began days after the deadly assault in late November, gradually helped the two sides overcome mutual suspicions and paved the way for Islamabad's announcement last week acknowledging that some of the planning for the attack had occurred on Pakistani soil, The Post quoted sources as saying.
On November 26 last year, 183 people, including American nationals, were shot dead by Pakistani terrorists who entered Mumbai through sea. Only one of the Pakistani terrorists involved in the attack was captured by the Indian security forces and is in the custody of Mumbai police.
Referring to interviews with sources in the US and foreign government, the newspaper said the intelligence went well beyond the public revelations about the ten Mumbai terrorists, and included sophisticated communications intercepts and an array of physical evidence detailing how the gunmen and their supporters planned and executed their three-day killing spree in Mumbai.
"Indian and Pakistani intelligence agencies separately shared their findings with the CIA, which relayed the details while also vetting the intelligence and filling in blanks with gleanings from its networks," the Post quoted sources as saying.
"The US role was described in interviews with Pakistani officials and confirmed by US sources with detailed knowledge of the arrangement. The arrangement is ongoing, and it is unknown whether it will continue after the Mumbai case is settled," the newspaper said.
The Post article is a revelation as so far only the role of FBI in the Mumbai investigation was known.
Terming the sharing of intelligence information between the two South Asian neighbours as unparallel, The Post said this signalled a thawing of tensions between the two countries.
"India shared evidence bilaterally, but that's not what cinched it," a senior Pakistani official familiar with the exchanges was quoted as saying. "It was the details, shared between intelligence agencies, with the CIA serving mainly as a bridge," the official said.
Observing that intelligence has been a good bridge, a US official was quoted as saying: "Everyone on the American side went into this with their eyes open, aware of the history, the complexities, the tensions. But at least the two countries are talking, not shooting."

I am of the opinion that India should be ruled by a king belonging to a royal and higher caste Brahmin family. It was USA which created the Mujahideen to cause the unravelling of the mighty Soviet Union;USA with the help of Saudi Arabia converted most of the drug-peddlers,smugglers,goondas,etc. of Afghanistan and other parts of the world into Mujahideen and provided them with sophesticated weapons to defeat the soviet army deployed in Afghanistan.After the eviction of Soviet Union from Afghanistan which finally contributed to the collapse of Soviet Union, USA ignored them causing them to fight against each other killing thousands of Afghani civilians.Then, USA and Pakistan with Saudi support created Taleban which took over most of Afghanistan.Taleban succeeded in ending the fight between Mujahideen factions and restored order in Afghanistan.When Taleban gave shelter to Osama Bin Laden,Saudi Arabia and USA started hating them.USA is actually suffering from the seeds of 'Islamic terrorism' it sowed. Were not the terror attacks of Mumbai orchestrated by CIA and Mossad with the help of Pakistani leaders and for Indian leaders to enable them to purchase large quantities of weapons from USA and Israel and receive huge amounts as kickbacks?Narendra Modi and Togadia used Chotta Rajan to eliminate the ATS chief Karkare during the terror attacks with the intention of scuttling the investigation into Malegaon blasts which had nearly exposed their involvement in terrorist bombings. When the siege of Taj Mahal was going on, Modi entered that hotel and came out freely. America paid Pakistani leaders as reward for using Pakistanis and training them to launch the attacks and also to keep their mouth shut against the anti-Pakistani utterances of Indian leaders.It is worth mentioning that there were many articles of Pakistani journalists criticizing their leaders for cheating Pakistani citizens by receiving the money of India and creating opportunity to brutalize Islamists.
This can not be possibly true as among the victims,most of them were Isrealis,U.S.Nationals. CIA/Mossad are not expected to take part in a plot that will result casualities of their nationalities. This accusation makes little or no sense at all.The whole episode was conceived,enacted in perfection by ISI agents and so called Taliban and tribal ruffians of Swat region of Pakistan.

But the point here is, whatever CIA did was not out of good intention, it is them who need to untie this knot (this mess). Obviously this is an opportunity to press pak to do more on that front and also confront pak's agencies about their involvement in this case.
While the siege of Taj Mahal was going on, newspapers reported that it was two Marathi speaking guys who gunned down Karkare, as narrated by the staff of Cama hospital.One D'Souza had stated that he has witnessed the policemen in the CST station not taking any interest to confront the terrorists though they had guns with them;An exporter named Farooq who was inside the Taj hotel, after seeing the terrorists, had called his bodyguard who was waiting outside to enter the hotel and kill the terrorists with his revolver and when the bodyguard tried to enter the hotel, the police prevented him and took him to the policestation and locked him up.Why were these incidents ignored by the investigators?
