Kolkata, April 01 The Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the state police has summoned CPM MP and Haldia Development Authority CEO Lakshman Seth in connection with the murder of a Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) leader that took place in Nandigram last year.

Seth represents Tamluk constituency in the

Parliament. His detractors, including the CPI, have accused him for initiating riots in Nandigram by issuing a land acquisition letter. In December 2007, an FIR was lodged against Seth for allegedly masterminding the murder of BUPC leaders Rabindranath Das and Khokon Shit.

While Das died, Shit managed to survive. In spite of the victims’ family members lodging FIRs against Seth, the police did not take any action against the MP. It was only then the CID was given the charge of investigating the case.

Sources in the CID said that apart from Seth, several other leaders have also been summoned for their alleged involvement in organising and abetting violence in Nandigram.

At present, Seth and most CPM leaders are in Coimbatore to attend the party’s 19th all-India congress. Sources added that the notices for questioning will be handed over to Seth as soon as he returns to the state. “If he fails to turn up, then we will have to go to him for questioning,” they added.

Soon after the ‘recapture’ of Nandigram by CPM supporters, Seth attended a public meeting in Nandigram on November 28, 2007.

He had also accompanied Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on the latter’s visit to Nandigram.
