Kolkata, April 6 In order to break the impasse at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), the Centre is now mulling over the deployment of CISF jawans at the institute instead of personnel from private security agencies.

The institute was closed on April 1 because of an agitation by CPM-backed labour union CITU.

The CITU has been agitating against the institute’s decision to replace the old security agency with a new one.

“We are contemplating deploying CISF to avoid controversies. This will bring down costs on security also. We are going to meet on April 8 and I believe a solution will emerge then,” said Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who had called a meeting here on Sunday to break the stalemate at the SRFTI.

The meeting was also attended by SRFTI chairman and eminent filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta, director Swapan Mullick, CPM MP from Jadavpur Sujan Chakrabarty, representative of the employees’ union owing allegiance to CITU and two representatives from the students.

The students also demanded the deployment of CISF at the institute and threatened to go on a strike if their demand was not met.

“We have demanded that the government deploy CISF jawans because we don’t want any politics here. We have come here to study in peace but because of the agitation, the institute has been facing turbulent times for over a month,” said Raka Dutta, one of the two students who was present at today’s meeting.
